In 2010, commingled handle on the Breeders’ Cup’s 14 races shot up 13 percent to a record, in the midst of an industry-wide three-year economic slump that had followed years of stagnation. With handle on the Breeders’ Cup Classic a record that year, the most reasonable explanation for the surge was that Zenyatta’s attempt to retire undefeated with her second Classic win in a row had given the Breeders’ Cup a much-needed shot in the arm.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Larry Jones and his owner Rick Porter could have gone the safe route and run Havre de Grace in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, a race in which she finished third at 3 and would have been heavily favored to win at Churchill Downs on Friday.
Instead, Jones and Porter decided to shoot for the grand prize, Horse of the Year honors, by entering Havre de Grace in Saturday's main event, the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. That gamble fell three lengths short after Havre de Grace finished fourth behind upset winner Drosselmeyer in the 1 1/4-mile Classic.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There was no fairy-tale ending to Uncle Mo’s comeback.
A star-crossed 3-year-old campaign for last year’s 2-year-old champion colt ended on a sour note as Uncle Mo finished 10th in Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Classic result came one year after Uncle Mo won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over this same Churchill Downs track.
However, trainer Todd Pletcher doesn’t believe it was the same Churchill track at all.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Buckleupbuttercup was up in the final strides to nail favored May Day Rose in the Grade 2, $150,000-added Chilukki Stakes, the finale of the 12-race Breeders’ Cup Saturday card at Churchill Downs.
With Javier Castellano aboard for Avalon Farms and trainer Eddie Kenneally, Buckleupbuttercup finished the one-mile distance in 1:37.03 over a fast track. She paid $10.60.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A jockey who suffered the most-crushing loss of his career in the same race a year ago, a trainer with whom he had won many major races in years past, and a horse who had been long forgotten since his Belmont Stakes victory 17 months earlier combined to win the richest race of the year on Saturday at Churchill Downs, when Drosselmeyer stormed down the center of the track to take the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Court Vision, the second-most unlikely winner in Breeders' Cup history, won a desperate photo finish with Turallure in the Breeders' Cup Mile and sent Mile legend Goldikova into retirement with her first Breeders' Cup loss.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Saturday’s Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile wasn’t decided until the wire, with the speedy Hansen outlasting favored Union Rags by a head. But the race was won around the Juvenile’s two turns.
Front-running Hansen was able to carve out a trouble-free trip in the 1 1/16-mile race, establishing a clear lead on the inside – in stark contrast to Union Rags, who after breaking from post 10, was shuffled back to sixth early and hung four to five wide throughout.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The baby-faced gene runs strong through the O’Brien family. Trainer Aidan has always looked much younger than his actual age, and his son, 18-year-old Joseph, could pass for 14 in a pinch. Aidan also has passed along another significant strand of DNA – high-class horsemanship. Joseph O’Brien rode in his first Breeders’ Cup race Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs, and he won it in a romp, booting home St Nicholas Abbey to become, at age 18 years 161 days, the youngest rider to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Donnie Von Hemel has won almost 1,900 races in his 27-year training career, but none bigger than Saturday afternoon when Caleb's Posse stormed down the center of the Churchill Downs stretch to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile by four lengths.
Shackleford, the Preakness winner, finished second by 1 3/4 lengths over longshot Tres Borrachos. Trappe Shot finished fourth and was followed in the order of finish by Tapizar, Jersey Town, Wilburn, the 5-2 favorite, The Factor, and Irrefutable.
