Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Testa Rossi, Kitten Kaboodle lead Brown quartet

Barbara D. Livingston
Testa Rossi, winner of Belmont's Grade 3 Miss Grillo, is one of four fillies pre-entered by trainer Chad Brown for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.

Trainer Chad Brown will have four fillies in the gate for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and any one of them could possibly win – they are that good. But Brown might not saddle the favorite, or the winner despite his numbers, in what shapes up as a very competitive race.

Brown will have 29% of the starters in the Juvenile Fillies Turf if 14 start, but the likely favorite will be either West Coast-based Clenor or French invader Vorda.

Breeders' Cup Sprint: 2012 champ Trinniberg among five returnees

Barbara D. Livingston
Trinniberg was 13-1 when he won the 2012 Breeders' Cup Sprint, but figures to be an even bigger price this year.

If the field for the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint has a familiar look, it should. Five of the 12 likely starters for the race return from last year’s Sprint, including the winner, Trinniberg, and runner-up The Lumber Guy. Sum of the Parts, Justin Phillip, and Fast Bullet, who finished 4-5-6 in the 2012 Sprint, will also be back for another try at the $2 million purse and perhaps a chance at divisional honors.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile: Tap It Rich adds intrigue to 14 pre-entries

Shigeki Kikkawa
Tap It Rich won his career debut Oct. 12, going a mile on the Santa Anita main track in 1:36.78 and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 89. Trainer Bob Baffert is likely to pre-enter the ridgling in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

He will come into the race with the least amount of experience and will be running back on the shortest amount of rest, but Tap It Rich could be the most intriguing of the 14 2-year-olds pre-entered for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Breeders' Cup Mile: A larger field than expected; Hannon will send Olympic Glory from England

Barbara D. Livingston
Wise Dan will be favored in the Breeders' Cup Mile despite having been beaten over Polytrack in his most recent start.

Spend enough time around a racing office and you’ll notice the number of horses that wind up in a stakes race sometimes corresponds inversely to the number forecast to be entered.

When news of a short field spreads, horsemen sitting on the fence can decide en masse to take a shot. If a bulky field is widely predicted, the fence-sitters take a pass.

Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Groupie Doll figures slight favorite in title defense

Barbara D. Livingston
Groupie Doll is back to defend her title in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Just a few minor surprises were in store on pre-entry day in regard to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Three longshot prospects whose names had not been mentioned were among the 13 named to the seven-furlong race, while the only defections were two horses who would have been outsiders anyway.

Shigeki Kikkawa

ARCADIA, Calif. – Little Mike and Point of Entry, the first two finishers in the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita in 2012, were among the 13 horses pre-entered Monday for this year’s running at Santa Anita on Nov. 2.

Despite their success 12 months ago, they both approach the race with something to prove and face several opponents capable of winning.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf: Bobby’s Kitten heads 18 pre-entrants

Barbara D. Livingston
Bobby's Kitten, winner of the Grade 3 Pilgrim, is the likely favorite for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Bobby’s Kitten heads the list of 18 2-year-olds that were pre-entered Monday in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. The field will be limited to 14 starters.

Trained by Chad Brown, Bobby’s Kitten will likely be favored in the one-mile race off his strong performance in Grade 3 Pilgrim, a Win and You’re In race in which he earned a 91 Beyer Speed Figure.

The only favorite to win the Juvenile Turf since its inception in 2007 was Pounced in 2009. Last year, George Vancouver upset Noble Tune, who also was coming off a sharp win in the Pilgrim for Brown.

Breeders' Cup Distaff: Royal Delta faces upstarts Princess of Sylmar, Beholder

Barbara D. Livingston
Royal Delta breezed five furlongs in 59.88 seconds Saturday at Belmont Park ahead of the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

A six-runner Distaff is the smallest field of Breeders’ Cup 2013, but the race brings large appeal. Once again, the $2 million race for fillies and mares will be among the most anticipated races of the season.

It is becoming fall tradition – champion Royal Delta the horse to beat in the Distaff. A year ago, she dusted outstanding 3-year-old My Miss Aurelia. The newest upstarts are Princess of Sylmar and Beholder. They both are 3, and both are very good.
