Who will ride Main Sequence in Breeders' Cup Turf?

Tom Keyser
Rajiv Maragh broke his arm one race after winning the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic aboard Main Sequence.

ELMONT, N.Y. - In Main Sequence, trainer Graham Motion has a top-flight contender for the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf. Unfortunately, it appears as though he will need a new rider for his three-time Grade 1 winning colt.

One race after Main Sequence won Saturday’s $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park, his rider, Rajiv Maragh, went down in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and suffered a broken right arm. Maragh underwent surgery on Sunday, but it is highly unlikely the 29-year-old rider will  be able to make it back in five weeks.

Shared Belief will train more lightly toward Breeders' Cup

Shigeki Kikkawa
Shared Belief traveled about 66 feet more than runner-up Fed Biz in the Awesome Again, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief emerged in good condition from his eventful, winning journey in the Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday, but his trainer and co-owner, Jerry Hollendorfer, on Sunday morning at Santa Anita said the hard race would likely cause him to train Shared Belief differently than anticipated prior to his next start, the Breeders’ Cup Classic here on Nov. 1.

“I guess a good, hard race isn’t ideal, but I won’t have to train him as hard as I normally do,” Hollendorfer said.

Angela Renee's long trip worthwhile in Chandelier

Shigeki Kikkawa
Angela Renee won her first career two-turn race Saturday in the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The decision of trainer Todd Pletcher to send Angela Renee to California to get a two-turn race into her paid off handsomely on Saturday at Santa Anita when Angela Renee captured the Grade 1, $300,500 Chandelier Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

The victory gave Angela Renee a fees-paid berth to the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies through the Win and You’re In program.

Shigeki Kikkawa
Emollient earned her fourth career Grade 1 win Saturday in the Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Emollient ended a disappointing summer campaign with her fourth career Grade 1 win in Saturday’s $301,750 Rodeo Drive Stakes for fillies and mares at Santa Anita.

The win was somewhat overshadowed by the fall of Moulin de Mougin on the turn. Moulin de Mougin was attempting a wide rally when she appeared to lose her balance and fall, sending jockey Mike Smith tumbling to the turf.

Shared Belief by a neck in Awesome Again

Shigeki Kikkawa
Shared Belief won his seventh straight start Saturday in the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

American Pharoah delivers as FrontRunner favorite

Shigeki Kikkawa
American Pharoah led throughout Saturday to win the 1 1/16-mile FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. - American Pharoah led throughout the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity over seven furlongs on Sept. 3 to record his first career win. He used the same tactics to win Saturday’s $300,750 FrontRunner Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita, a victory expected to make him the favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile here on Nov. 1.

That is a role trainer Bob Baffert said American Pharoah deserves after his two major stakes wins. The victories are a contrast to a fifth-place finish in his debut at Del Mar on Aug. 9.

Beholder strong enough in Zenyatta Stakes

Shigeki Kikkawa
Beholder rallied Saturday to win the Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Beholder did not need a brilliant performance Saturday in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita to move toward the Breeder’s Cup.

All she needed was to run well. Mission accomplished.

Beholder ($2.80) scored a workmanlike comeback victory, winning the $300,000 race by three-quarters of a length. The pacesetting Tiz Midnight finished second, 3 1/4 lengths in front of Iotapa, whose chances were compromised by a poor start.
