ARCADIA, Calif. – The comeback victory by Beholder on Saturday at Santa Anita was not the most impressive of her career. It did not need to be.

BC Juvenile Fillies Turf: Brown has strong contender in Lady Eli

Joe Labozzetta/NYRA
Lady Eli scores by three lengths Sunday in the Grade 3 Miss Grillo Stakes.

Lady Eli gave trainer Chad Brown his third straight win in the Grade 3, $200,000 Miss Grillo at Belmont Park on Sunday, and Brown hopes she can give him a second win in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 31.

Brown won the inaugural running of the Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2008 with Maram, who was coming off a narrow win in the Miss Grillo. Maram paid $24.20 for her win in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Following her three-length win over 50-1 longshot Margaret Reay in the Miss Grillo, Lady Eli will be a much shorter price this year.

Baffert has strong early favorite in American Pharoah

Shigeki Kikkawa
American Pharoah led throughout Saturday to win the 1 1/16-mile FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Bob Baffert has won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile three times. However, he is winless with four favorites in the race dating back to 1999.

That streak most certainly will be tested in this year’s $2 million Juvenile on Nov. 1, when Baffert sends out American Pharoah, who solidified his status as the Juvenile favorite with a devastatingly easy 3 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita, the site of this year’s Breeders’ Cup.

McLaughlin maiden Imperia takes Pilgrim

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Second-time starter Imperia, with Javier Castellano subbing for the injured Rajiv Maragh, wins the Pilgrim Stakes for 2-year-olds.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin doesn’t run a maiden in a graded stakes race very often, but he thought there was plenty more to gain than to lose by running Imperia in Sunday’ Grade 3, $200,000 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park.

“Our percentage is so high second-time out,  especially with Lasix first time, we thought [if we lose] we could break his maiden later; if we win we can go on to the Breeders’ Cup,” McLaughlin said.
