Bobby's Kitten up in time in BC Turf Sprint

Tom Keyser
Bobby's Kitten, with Joel Rosario aboard, wins the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – For a year, Bobby’s Kitten has been a source of lingering frustration for trainer Chad Brown, the memories of a third-place finish in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita proving difficult to forget.

The aggravation is over. Bobby Kitten’s more than redeemed himself with an electrifying win in Saturday’s $920,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

“It took a full year to get over it,” Brown said.

Texas Red dominates BC Juvenile

Barbara D. Livingston
Texas Red, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, romps by 6 1/2 lengths in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – With a devastating turn of foot, Texas Red turned Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile into a family affair and created more havoc in the 2-year-old division.

Last for more than a half-mile, Texas Red launched a bid 3 1/2 furlongs out, split horses with a five-wide move, and powered home a convincing 6 1/2-length winner of the Juvenile at Santa Anita. Kent Desormeaux, the Hall of Fame jockey, rode the horse for his older brother, Keith, the trainer and part-owner of the colt.

With Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard, Judy the Beauty needed every bit of the perfect trip she got when finishing a head before Better Lucky in the seven-furlong race.

Dayatthespa all the way in BC Filly and Mare Turf

Tom Keyser
Dayatthespa, with Javier Castellano aboard, wires the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – At any distance and on almost every surface, speed is dangerous.

Dayatthespa proved it again Saturday at Santa Anita in a race that might have been the final start of her career. For sure, the 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf was the longest of her career. And Dayatthespa stole it.

Take Charge Brandi upsets BC Juvenile Fillies

Emily Shields
Take Charge Brandi and jockey Victor Espinoza score a 61-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – It won’t quite make up for losing last year’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic by a nose with Will Take Charge, but those same connections experienced quite a thrill Saturday when Take Charge Brandi upset the $2 million Juvenile Fillies at 61-1  at Santa Anita.

Ocho Ocho Ocho, Acceptance kick off Breeders' Cup Day with stakes wins

Debra A. Roma
Ocho Ocho Ocho wins the Juvenile Turf Sprint, which was moved to the main track.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 12-race Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita began Saturday under a caution flag of sorts: two of the three lead-in races originally scheduled for turf were transferred to the main track because of overnight rain, leading to scratch-laden fields for both.

The Saturday opener became the misnomered Juvenile Turf Sprint, with Ocho Ocho Ocho easily prevailing in a field of seven 2-year-olds by finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in a swift 1:14.57 over a main track rated good.

Ocho Ocho Ocho, a Kentucky-bred colt by Street Sense, returned $3.60 to win.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hootenanny, the winner of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Friday, probably will be pointed for a race in England – perhaps the English 2000 Guineas – next spring, trainer Wesley Ward said Saturday.

Lady Eli has earned Florida vacation

Tom Keyser
Lady Eli and jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by 2 1/4 lengths Friday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Lady Eli, dominant winner of Friday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita, came out of her race in good shape and will get a vacation in south Florida before preparing for her 3-year-old campaign, trainer Chad Brown said Saturday.

“She looked good this morning, ate up everything," Brown said. "Cold and tight everywhere. Really pleased with her this morning."

Brown said that Lady Eli would be shipped to Palm Meadows, a training center in south Florida, early this week.

Litfin: How I'd play the Breeders' Cup pick six on Saturday

The strategy for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Ultra Pick Six with a $2.5 million-guaranteed pool is pretty simple: Survive and advance through the first four legs, and get to a pair of imposing favorites at the end – Toronado (#5) in the Mile, and Shared Belief (#6) in the Classic.

To get there, this is the plan:
