Texas Red, Take Charge Brandi no locks for Eclipse Awards

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Keith Desormeaux says he feels Texas Red beat the best field of 2-year-olds assembled this year in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

ARCADIA, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the winners of the two Breeders’ Cup races for juveniles are far from certain to win divisional championships.

Though Texas Red was a dominant winner of Saturday’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, it was his first win in a stakes. In September, he finished third behind American Pharoah in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes. American Pharoah, who also won the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, was withdrawn from the Juvenile on Tuesday with an injury.

Little Alexis pulled from Fasig-Tipton sale after spiking fever

ARCADIA, Calif. – Little Alexis, who finished a disappointing ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, was scratched from Monday’s Fasig-Tipton sale after spiking a temperature of 104 immediately after the race due to a possible reaction to her Lasix shot, according to owner-trainer Carlo Vaccarezza.

Vaccarezza said Little Alexis, who finished third earlier this year in the Grade 1 Test, returned to the barn after the Sprint breathing heavily and with a noticeable lump on the left side of her neck.

From right, Bayern, ridden by Martin Garcia, wins the Breeders' Cup Classic over Toast of New York and California Chrome on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A Breeders’ Cup Classic that was set up to be a clean-cut title-decider for Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male instead had a wholly unsatisfying ending Saturday at Santa Anita, where Bayern led from start to finish after clobbering several rivals at the start but was left the winner by the stewards after a lengthy inquiry.

Debra A. Roma
Shared Belief ran into trouble early and finished fourth Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. – To hear Mike Smith tell it, Shared Belief was finished at the start.

Shared Belief, last year’s 2-year-old champion, couldn’t overcome a severe bump at the break, some steadying through the stretch the first time, and a wide trip down the backside as he suffered his first career defeat when finishing fourth in Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, made a game run at Bayern in the stretch, but fell a half-length short in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. -- The roller-coaster ride that was California Chrome’s star-studded 2014 campaign came to a bittersweet end in the gloaming at Santa Anita late Saturday afternoon, where the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner came within a half-length of winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic and clinching not only the 3-year-old championship but perhaps Horse of the Year honors as well.

Work All Week, under Florent Geroux, denies Secret Circle a repeat win in the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Work All Week remained perfect on dirt and laid claim to the title of fastest horse in the world after holding off defending champion Secret Circle to register a half-length victory in the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Work All Week, a son of City Zip, is owned by his breeder, Richard Papiese’s Midwest Thoroughbreds. Midwest is the nation’s leading owner in races won in 2014. Work All Week also was the first Breeders’ Cup starter for both his trainer, Roger Brueggemann, and jockey Florent Geroux.

Main Sequence caps perfect year with BC Turf win

Barbara D. Livingston
Main Sequence (left), with John Velazquez aboard, beats Flintshire in the Breeders' Cup Turf on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – When Main Sequence turned for home in Saturday’s $2,760,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita, jockey John Velazquez had a clear path, but a formidable group of European-based runners to catch.

Velazquez was thinking 300 yards down the track.

“I was going so good,” he said. “My concern was getting the horse to the lead too early.”

Velazquez had perfect timing. Main Sequence rallied wide to take the lead in the final sixteenth and held off a stubborn rival in Flintshire to win the Grade 1 BC Turf by a half-length.[bc_video_id:341006:]
