Golden Horn looking to pull off first Arc-Breeders’ Cup double

Golden Horn has won two of Europe's biggest prizes this year - the Epsom Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (above).

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Dancing Brave might as well have come to Santa Anita in 1986 for the third edition of the Breeders’ Cup Turf with a cluster of footmen and butlers stationed outside his stall. Royalty – that’s what the 3-year-old colt looked like, his bitter defeat in the Epsom Derby having given way to a blistering romp in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the official performance rating of which (141) cast Dancing Brave in an epic light.

Underdog role no longer fits O’Connell, Lady Shipman

Barbara D. Livingston
Lady Shipman, trained by Kathleen O'Connell, may go favored in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint despite being a 3-year-old filly facing older males.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The last time Kathleen O’Connell saddled a horse for a major event in Kentucky, there wasn’t much hope of winning. Watch Me Out was 33-1 when he finished 18th in the 2011 Kentucky Derby for O’Connell, whose presence was widely noted primarily because only 13 female trainers had run a Derby horse before.

But when O’Connell leads over Lady Shipman for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland on Saturday, things will be considerably different. Lady Shipman figures as a major contender, if not the outright favorite, in the 5 1/2-furlong race.

American Pharoah sizzles in final workout

Shigeki Kikkawa
With Martin Garcia up, American Pharoah works for the final time - a half-mile drill in 46.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Triple Crown winner American Pharoah zoomed a half-mile in 46.60 seconds at Santa Anita on Monday, the last workout of a legendary career that ends Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.

If the ease of Monday’s workout is an indication, American Pharoah’s status as the favorite for the BC Classic is well deserved.

Lea headed for Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Debra A. Roma
Lea works four furlongs at Keeneland on Monday. Trainer Bill Mott, citing the possibility of soft turf on Saturday, has decided to run Lea in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile rather than the Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – With a strong threat of rain midweek and the potential for a soft turf course this weekend, trainer Bill Mott called an audible Monday, electing to enter Lea in Friday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile instead of Saturday’s $2 million Mile on turf.

When Mott pre-entered Lea on Oct. 19, he listed the Mile as his first preference and the Dirt Mile as his second preference. But soft turf could compromise Lea’s chances in the Mile, Mott said, despite the fact that he finished second in the Woodbine Mile over a course labeled “yielding” last month.

Shigeki Kikkawa
Masochistic seeks his first Grade 1 victory in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Masochistic had his final workout at Santa Anita on Sunday in advance of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland next Saturday. The two-time stakes winner worked five furlongs in 58.40 seconds without company, the fastest of 50 recorded works at the distance.

“He looked like he did it easily,” trainer Ron Ellis said. “He was relaxed.”

With the final workout completed, Ellis has another prerace objective to achieve: He is banking on an outside post position for Masochistic in the BC Sprint. Post positions will be drawn on Monday.

Tale of S'avall misses workout, still on target for Juvenile

ELMONT, N.Y. – Breeders' Cup Juvenile hopeful Tale of S’avall missed a workout scheduled for Sunday due to some tenderness in his frogs – the bottom part of the foot that acts like a shock absorber – trainer Barclay Tagg said Sunday morning.

Tagg said he still plans to take the horse to Keeneland on Monday with the idea of running in the Juvenile.

"His frogs are a little tender, but he's dead fit," Tagg said. "His last work was very good. Personally, I don't think [missing] this work will make a bit of difference to him."

Honor Code inspires confidence ahead of BC Classic

Michael Amoruso
Honor Code is scheduled to ship to Keeneland on Monday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Though Honor Code is coming off a lackluster third-place finish in the Grade 2 Kelso earlier this month, trainer Shug McGaughey said his confidence level is “pretty high” entering next Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland.

“That could have helped him, maybe pushed him forward,” McGaughey said Sunday morning at Belmont Park. “I think that his last three weeks have been the best three weeks I’ve seen him have.”

La Verdad headed to BC Filly and Mare Sprint

Joe Labozzetta/NYRA
La Verdad won Saturday's Iroquois Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths.

ELMONT, N.Y. – La Verdad, who won Saturday’s $150,000 Iroquois Stakes at Belmont Park, is expected to ship Monday to Kentucky and run Saturday in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland, trainer Linda Rice said.

“After rating yesterday, I think we should go,” Rice said Sunday morning in her Belmont Park office. “The fact she’s headed to the breeding shed after this, what are we saving her for? What have we got to lose?”
