Weaver has two in loaded Jessamine Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Majestic Bonnie won her maiden debut at Saratoga this summer.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The depth of competition that’s so frequently in evidence at Keeneland may become absurd Wednesday when the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes is run for the 26th time.

Fourteen 2-year-old fillies will vie for a Win and You’re In berth in the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita, and more than half rate a reasonable chance at victory in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. The balance of the lineup is typified by the uncoupled George Weaver duo of Majestic Bonnie and Zero Zee, both maiden winners at Saratoga this summer.

Benoit & Associates
Gloryzapper, ridden by Stewart Elliott, wins her first stakes in the Grade 3 L.A. Woman.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Gloryzapper had a narrow lead with a furlong to go in Sunday’s $101,035 L.A. Woman Stakes at Santa Anita, an ideal position from trainer Phil D’Amato’s perspective.

“I like her in that scenario,” D’Amato said. “When she gets her head in front, she loves to fight them off.”

Shigeki Kikkawa
Vyjack coul run in either the Breeders' Cup Mile or Dirt Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The first- and third-place finishes by Vyjack and Obviously in Saturday’s $201,725 City of Hope Mile gives trainer Phil D’Amato a strong roster of candidates for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita on Nov. 5, or a chance to diversify his team in other Breeders’ Cup races.

Sunday, D’Amato said Vyjack and Obviously will be considered for the BC Mile, but that Vyjack is also a candidate for the $1 million BC Dirt Mile on Nov. 4, and Obviously may be pre-entered in the $1 million BC Turf Sprint on Nov. 5.

Benoit & Associates
Vyjack could be headed to the Breeders' Cup Mile after setting a turf course record winning the City of Hope Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Vyjack ran a mile on turf in course-record time of 1:31.69 in Saturday’s $201,725 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita. Before the race, trainer Phil D’Amato said he preferred the Dirt Mile. The win in the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile may have changed the outlook.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Baseball isn’t the only game of inches.

Fans of the horse Syndergaard  -  including the New York Mets pitcher for whom he was named and who was in attendance Saturday at Belmont Park - were reminded of that as Practical Joke, after a furlong battle, got his nose down on the wire in front of Syndergaard to win the Grade 1, $500,000 Champagne.
