The Classic will be run Nov. 5 at Santa Anita, and the Dirt Mile will be run Nov. 4 there.

Big Score prevails in Zuma Beach Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Big Score has been jockey Flavien Prat’s leading juvenile turf runner this year.

Prat rode Big Score to a second-place finish in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 3, a one-length loss that left the 23-year-old rider frustrated at what could have happened with a better trip.

Prat made amends when he guided Big Score to an attractive win in Monday’s $102,415 Zuma Beach Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

“He deserved it,” Prat said.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The puzzle surrounding losses by Miss Southern Miss in recent stakes has been solved.

She needs a turf course.

After two disappointing races on dirt at Del Mar in August and September, Miss Southern Miss cruised to her first stakes win in Monday’s $102,070 Surfer Girl Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on turf.

“We just found her number,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said.

Brown sending A Lot to Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
A Lot, listed at 10-1 on the morning line for the Fourstardave, could spice up the all-stakes pick four at Saratoga and Del Mar.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The last time the Breeders’ Cup was held at Santa Anita, trainer Chad Brown won the Turf Sprint with Bobby’s Kitten, who was turning back in distance from a mile and trying the hillside turf course for the first time.

Brown will attempt to use that formula again this year with A Lot, a horse who last raced at a mile – finishing second in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga in August – and will be trying the 6 1/2 furlongs down the hill for the first time.

Pretty City Dancer to miss Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

Churchill Downs/Coady Photography
Pretty City Dancer won the Debutante by 3 1/4 lengths.

Pretty City Dancer, one of the top 2-year-old fillies in North America, will not race in the Breeders' Cup, according to trainer Mark Casse.

Casse said last week that Pretty City Dancer had come out of her Sept. 23 workout at Saratoga with a minor ankle injury and had missed some training. On Monday, Casse said that although Pretty City Dancer had recovered from the injury, he had decided to give her 30 days off and that she would miss the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Nov. 5.

Gormley gets lesson on rationing speed

Shigeki Kikkawa
FrontRunner winner Gormley is pointing toward the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Gormley, the winner of the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1, was given a fundamental lesson in a half-mile workout at Santa Anita on Monday.

A leading hopeful for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile here on Nov. 5, Gormley worked in 49.60 seconds after starting behind stablemate Veneto, who was timed in 50 seconds.

“We went back to the basics,” trainer John Shirreffs said. “We worked him behind another horse. He stayed behind another horse as long as he could to get the experience of dirt in his face.

Despite loss, Tepin still on track for Breeders' Cup Mile

Kim Pratt
Tepin has had some success on wet turf courses in America.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tepin emerged from her upset loss in the First Lady here on Saturday in good shape and will begin training at Churchill Downs this week in an effort to get back to the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita in peak condition, according to Norman Casse, son of and assistant to trainer Mark Casse.

“She’s good,” said Norman Casse. “We’ll take her back to the track sometime this week and get her back into her routine. We’ll probably fly her out to California as late as we can.”

Miss Temple City in rarified company after Shadwell Turf Mile win

Coady Photography
Miss Temple City pays $17.40 for her win under Edgar Prado in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Matching what only Wise Dan had done was remarkable enough. But considering that she was a filly running against males when she swept the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile and the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile in the same year, her feat is downright extraordinary.

No wonder Graham Motion got so choked up after Miss Temple City held on to win the $1 million Shadwell on Saturday at Keeneland.

“She’s pretty special to me,” Motion told NBC Sports.
