Belmont Stakes television ratings up markedly from 2010

The race portion of the 2011 Belmont Stakes broadcast on NBC Sports on Saturday had a 4.3 rating and 10 share, well over the numbers for the anemic 2010 broadcast on ABC but slightly off the 2009 rating and share.

Triple Crown is thriving, but series could use some tweaks

Ruler On Ice’s victory in the Belmont Stakes brought the Triple Crown to an unsatisfying conclusion. The competition in this spring’s classic races had been subpar, and for the 33rd straight year no horse was going to sweep the three-races series.

Belmont Day numbers up all around

ELMONT, N.Y. – Business figures for the Belmont Stakes and its undercard on Saturday at Belmont Park in New York rebounded considerably from the depressed numbers for the 2010 event, according to figures released by the track and television broadcasters.

Nehro to have surgery for ankle chip

Nehro, who finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, came out of the race with a small chip in his right front ankle and will have surgery in Kentucky on Wednesday, owner Ahmed Zayat reported on Monday.

Nehro on Monday morning was "flying now to Kentucky," from New York, Zayat said, in order to have surgery with Dr. Larry Bramlage on Wednesday morning at the Rood and Riddle equine clinic in Lexington.

Animal Kingdom under consideration for Travers, Haskell

Prior to the Belmont Stakes, Barry Irwin, the president of the Team Valor syndicate that owns Animal Kingdom, said that a start in either the Arlington Million or Secretariat Stakes, both on grass, would be a likely objective this summer for the Kentucky Derby winner. But in light of the Belmont Stakes result, in which Animal Kingdom finished sixth after getting mugged at the start, Irwin is reconsidering, and said the Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 27 at Saratoga is one of two races back in play, along with the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell at Monmouth Park on July 31.

Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom may try turf this summer

Animal Kingdom may be pointed to a turf race at Arlington Park in August.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Graham Motion, the trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, was to spend Sunday afternoon in Manhattan, taking in the Broadway musical “Wicked’’ with his family.

“It’ll be nice not to think about racing for a little while,’’ Motion said Sunday morning.

Belmont Stakes: Velazquez has harsh words for fellow rider Maragh

ELMONT, N.Y. - John Velazquez  said he believes that jockey Rajiv Maragh was careless in his handling of Isn’t He Perfect shortly after the start of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, causing  Velazquez to nearly become unseated  from Animal Kingdom in the early stages of the race. Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby winner and Preakness runner-up eventually finished sixth as the 5-2 favorite in the Belmont.

Belmont Stakes card produces 9 percent gain in handle for NYRA

ELMONT, N.Y. – Total all-sources wagering on the 13-race card at Belmont Park on Saturday was $81,245,326, a 9 percent increase over the all-sources figure for the Belmont Stakes day card last year, according to the New York Racing Association.

The handle figures were boosted by record handle for the pick six on a Belmont Day. The total pool for the pick six was $1,921,917, including a two-day carryover of $144,003. The previous record for a pick six on a Belmont Stakes day was set in 2008, when the total pool was $1,869,152.

Belmont Stakes: Breen unsure what's next for Ruler On Ice

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Ruler On Ice, the upset winner of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, came out of the race in terrific shape, trainer Kelly Breen said Sunday morning.

“Looks great, as if he didn’t even run,” Breen said Sunday morning.
