DRF Breeding staff writer Joe Nevills analyzes the Belmont Stakes field, in post position order, in the form of Haiku; a Japanese poem of 17 syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five.
Frac Daddy
Sophomore slump hits hard
Still seeking the follow-up
To his maiden win
Freedom Child
Crushed the local prep
Not a strong precursor to
Belmont Stakes success

ELMONT, N.Y. - After 3 1/2 inches of rain pelted Belmont Park over a 24-hour period, the main track was to begin as muddy and sealed, but track officials are hopeful the surface could be fast by post time for the 145th Belmont Stakes.
“I’m pretty confident that we’ll be wet fast by then,” said Glen Kozak, the New York Racing Association’s vice president of facilities and racing surfaces. “If we get real lucky, we’ll be fast.”

My 1-2-3 picks for the Belmont Stakes are the same 1-2-3 picks I made five weeks ago for the Kentucky Derby, even though they ran 11-1-3 instead of 1-2-3 and none of them won the Preakness. I swear I am not merely being stubborn. Let me explain.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Dr. Larry Bramlage, who sustained a head injury in a golf cart accident at Churchill Downs two days before the Kentucky Derby, will be back in his role as the American Association of Equine Practitioners on-call veterinarian for NBC during Saturday’s broadcast of the Belmont Stakes.

Bramlage, 61, said he was feeling better in time for the Preakness, but was not given clearance by doctors to fly. He is based in Lexington, Ky.
ELMONT, N.Y. – Retired Hall of Fame jockeys Jerry Bailey and Angel Cordero Jr. were contemporaries of Gary Stevens and believe the fellow Hall of Famer is riding better now than when he did just before his retirement in 2005.
Stevens, 50, returned to the saddle in January, and three weeks ago he rode Oxbow to victory in the Preakness Stakes. Stevens will be aboard Oxbow again in Saturday’s 145th running of the Belmont Stakes, a race he has won three times.
