Little Daddy has won a maiden race (above) and an optional claimer.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – One of the horses pointing for the Sir Bear, a one-mile overnight stakes here on Kentucky Derby Day, is Little Daddy, who is unbeaten in two starts. Trainer Carlo Vaccarezza said Wednesday that if Little Daddy were to run well in that race, he’d strongly consider pointing him for the Belmont Stakes five weeks later.

Belmont Park: Modest price increases for admission, seating at rich Belmont Stakes card

While there will be some price increases in admission and seating for this year’s Belmont Stakes, they are not nearly as steep as initially thought when NYRA president and chief executive Chris Kay suggested they would be in line with prices for the Kentucky Derby.

Grandstand admission to the Belmont Stakes on June 7 will remain at $10, while clubhouse admission will increase by $10 to $30, the New York Racing Association announced Monday.

Barbara D. Livingston
Palace Malice, shown training at Palm Meadows this winter, won the 2013 Belmont Stakes, which has been boosted this year from $1 million to $1.5 million.

The beefed up Belmont Park spring/summer stakes schedule isn’t confined to Belmont Stakes Day.

One week after announcing that the June 7 Belmont Stakes Day card will be the second-richest program on the North American calendar, the New York Racing Association released the entire spring/summer schedule that will present 62 stakes worth $17.95 million in purses – including six races worth at least $1 million. In 2013, Belmont’s spring/summer meet offered 37 stakes worth $9.3 million with only the Belmont Stakes worth $1 million.

Palace Malice is fourth Belmont winner for Farish, Lane’s End

Nikki Sherman Photography
Palace Malice wins the Belmont Stakes on June 8, joining Bet Twice, A.P. Indy, and Lemon Drop Kid as Belmont winners bred by William S. Farish III.

A popular expression used to describe an appealing horse in the bloodstock market is to say that he or she “ticked all the boxes.” For breeder William S. Farish III, Palace Malice’s triumph in the Belmont Stakes did just that.

Breeder of record? Check. The bay colt took his first steps at Farish’s Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., as the third foal out of the stakes-winning Royal Anthem mare Palace Rumor.

Campbell, Dogwood partnership enjoy another classic success

Michael Amoruso
Cot Campbell, celebrating with jockey Mike Smith, picked up Palace Malice for $200,000 at Keeneland’s sale of 2-year-olds in April 2012.

W. Cothran “Cot” Campbell, president of the trailblazing Dogwood Stable partnership, always felt there were bright things in the future for Palace Malice, a well-regarded colt who, through a run of bad luck, entered the Belmont Stakes without a graded stakes victory to his name.

“He deserved this – I said, ‘He deserves a blue sky somewhere,’ ” Campbell said. “And luckily, that blue sky appeared at about 6:30 Saturday.”

Jay Hovdey: Palace Malice puts Aiken in a New York state of mind

Barbara D. Livingston
Cot Campbell hoists the Belmont Stakes trophy after Palace Malice's upset victory.

They were going wild in Aiken, gathered around their TV screens and watching their local hero, Palace Malice, out there on the lead under the colors of Aiken’s very own Dogwood Stable. You could hear the cheers coming from every corner of the horsey little South Carolina town, and what a beautiful sight it was – right up to the moment Palace Malice hit a wall at the top of the Kentucky Derby stretch and backed up to finish 12th.

Belmont Park: Orb, Oxbow, Palace Malice may meet again in Travers

Tom Keyser
Palace Malice, the winner of Saturday's Belmont Stakes, likely will run in the Jim Dandy on July 27 and the Travers on Aug. 24.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Orb won the Kentucky Derby but finished behind Oxbow in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and those two colts both were behind Palace Malice on Saturday in the Belmont, leaving the male 3-year-old title up for grabs nearing the midway point of the year.

Three different horses winning three legs of the Triple Crown has happened often, including just two years ago, but there never was a subsequent showdown in 2011. This year, however, all three are pointing to the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24. The routes they take there could differ, though.

Belmont Stakes: Palace Malice targeting Jim Dandy, Travers

Justin N. Lane
Palace Malice (right) will target the Jim Dandy and Travers stakes at Saratoga after winning the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Palace Malice, who won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, came out of the race in good condition and is likely headed to Saratoga for the Jim Dandy Stakes on July 27 and the Travers on Aug. 24, trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday at Belmont Park.

Both Preakness winner Oxbow, who was second in the Belmont, and Kentucky Derby winner Orb, who was third, also could point to the Travers, making that race potentially a pivotal showdown for the 3-year-old male title.
