Time Squared to run in Belmont

Time Squared, who was sixth in the Blue Grass Stakes in April before winning an allowance race most recently, will run on Saturday in the 139th Belmont Stakes, trainer Patrick Biancone said Sunday.

Biancone said he believed Time Squared ran well in the Blue Grass, in which he finished just three lengths behind the victorious Dominican. "It was a very good race in a funny race," he said of the Blue Grass, which had a slow pace and a furious finish.

Slew's Tizzy perfect in final tune-up

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Slew's Tizzy had his final workout for the Belmont Stakes when breezing a half-mile in 48.20 seconds over a fast surface early Saturday at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, Ky.

Trainer Greg Fox said the work, under regular exercise rider Alejandro Contreras, "couldn't have gone better," and that Slew's Tizzy "went the exact same type of work" as he did before winning the May 12 Lone Star Derby in Texas.

"The breeze basically was the last half-mile of a two-mile gallop," said Fox. "It was perfect. He did it well within himself."

Street Sense's owner, Jim Tafel (left), and trainer, Carl Nafzger, are aiming for the Travers and Breeders' Cup Classic with the Kentucky Derby-winning colt.

Immediately following the heartbreaking loss by Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense in the Preakness Stakes, trainer Carl Nafzger said he would not run in the Belmont Stakes on June 9. For the next week and a half, though, he wavered. But on Thursday, Nafzger fell back on his first thought. He announced, after consulting Wednesday night with owner Jim Tafel, that Street Sense would bypass the final and longest leg of the Triple Crown.

Imawildandcrazyguy works before shipping

Imawildandcrazyguy ran perhaps the best race of his life when closing strongly to finish fourth in the Kentucky Derby, a performance that convinced his trainer, Bill Kaplan, to try for the longer Belmont Stakes.

While precious few are willing to take on Curlin, Hard Spun, and possibly Street Sense, Imawildandcrazyguy will be part of the field for the 139th Belmont on June 9. On Tuesday at Calder, he turned in his penultimate drill for that race, which was officially timed in 1:03.60 for five furlongs.

Curlin back to work; Sightseeing drops out

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Curlin and Street Sense have been the marquee horses for this year's Triple Crown, with a victory apiece so far. Both are potential runners for the 139th Belmont Stakes on June 9 at Belmont Park, and Monday it was Curlin who began his serious preparation for the 1 1/2-mile race with a five-furlong work in 1:03.20 at Churchill Downs.

Curlin works easy five furlongs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Curlin had his first workout since his dramatic Preakness victory when breezing five furlongs in 1:03.20 just after dawn Monday over a fast Churchill Downs track.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said beforehand that he wanted something very much like the 1:03.20 that one of his other horses had breezed during the first set, shortly after 6 a.m. Eastern. He got precisely that, as Curlin, with exercise rider Carmen Rosas aboard, proceeded through splits of 13.60, 26.80, 38.60, 51.20, and 1:03.20 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:16.60.

Gomez to ride Hard Spun in Belmont

All week, the connections of Hard Spun said little about their jockey situation, but that spoke volumes.

It was becoming increasingly clear that jockey Mario Pino was going to be replaced for the Belmont Stakes following his questionable ride in the Preakness Stakes. On Saturday, Garrett Gomez was confirmed as Pino's replacement by Larry Jones, who trains Hard Spun.
