Mischief River pointed to Best Pal off maiden score

CYPRESS, Calif. – Mischief River’s appearance in a maiden race for 2-year-olds at Los Alamitos on Saturday led to both a learning experience and a victory. The colt is set for a stakes appearance next month at Del Mar.

Trainer James Glenn Jr. said Mischief River will be pointed to the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes at six furlongs on Aug. 11, a key prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 8.

Senor Buscador on tight schedule for San Diego Handicap

Senor Buscador won last year's San Diego Handicap but is questionable to make the race this year.

CYPRESS, Calif. – Senor Buscador, winner of the $20 million Saudi Cup in February and third in the $12 million Dubai World Cup in March, is running out of time for a comeback in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 27.

Senor Buscador had three workouts at San Luis Rey Downs training center in June, including a half-mile in 47.80 seconds on June 22. With four weeks remaining before the $300,000 San Diego Handicap at 1 1/16 miles, trainer Todd Fincher said on Saturday that “it’s going to cut close” on whether Senor Buscador will be ready.

Gutierrez to ride in California for summer

Starting with the Great Lady M., Reylu Gutierrez will move his tack to California for the summer.

Reylu Gutierrez, who has won more than 100 races annually in five of the last six years, will begin riding in Southern California this week.

Gutierrez, 27, is scheduled to ride Daddysruby in Saturday’s Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos and ride there through Sunday’s closing day of the current summer meeting.

Mouffy drops from graded company into Perfect Sting

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The well-traveled Mouffy may have found a sweet spot at Aqueduct to land her first win in 10 months when she heads a field of five older fillies and mares entered in Thursday’s $150,000 Perfect Sting Stakes at Aqueduct.

The Perfect Sting, scheduled for one mile on the inner turf, is the co-feature along with the Grade 3, $175,000 Victory Ride Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on dirt, on the nine-race July Fourth program that begins at 1:05 p.m. Eastern.

Cairo Caper moves to turf in second start

Thursday's Woodbine card opens with a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds on the turf.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Nathan Squires is best known for training 2022 Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Cairo Consort, whom he sent out to finish third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Squires has another offspring of Cairo Prince in Thursday’s first race, Cairo Caper, who will transition to the turf in the six-furlong maiden special for 2-year-olds.

When debuting in a five-furlong maiden special on the Tapeta on May 31, Cairo Caper awaited room along the inside behind the leaders in the stretch before checking in third at 10-1.

Whiskeyjack makes local debut

Many signs point to Whiskeyjack being worthy of a long look from handicappers in a six-furlong, first-level allowance for 3-year-olds with a $30,000 claiming option on Wednesday evening at Emerald Downs.

Whiskeyjack, trained by Ryland Harwood, has started just once, in the $20,000 OTOBA Juvenile Stakes at Grants Pass last October. The son of Rise Up was a comfortable 2 3/4-length winner that day, and the fifth-place finisher, Pass the Crown, won his next start at Emerald Downs less than three weeks ago, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 60.
