Always brimming with talent, Mindframe ready to put on a show in Haskell

Mindframe put up two triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in his first three starts, including a 101 for his close second in the Belmont Stakes on June 8 at Saratoga.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. administered a left-handed pop of the riding crop to the 3-year-old colt Mindframe at about the eighth pole in a March 30 maiden sprint at Gulfstream Park. Not that Mindframe needed encouragement. Making his career debut, Mindframe looped rivals on the turn and already had put them all to bed when Ortiz, dishing out as many lessons as he could in the colt’s first start, gave his mount a taste of what a real race might feel like.

Unmatched Wisdom will need speed from rail in Curlin Stakes

Unmatched Wisdom is set as the 4-5 morning-line favorite for Friday's Curlin Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Chad Brown made it to the Kentucky Derby with Sierra Leone and Domestic Product. Had things gone differently, he might have had a third starter in Unmatched Wisdom.

“I had him ranked as one of my top three two-turn dirt colts that had a chance to get on the [Kentucky Derby] trail,” Brown said. “Pneumonia derailed him. He was out for quite a while.”

Secret Hottie gets first chance against winners

Secret Hottie will attempt to prove that her recent maiden win was no fluke as she meets other nonwinners of two for a $25,000 claiming tag in Friday’s feature race at Emerald Downs.

A Bonnie Jenne trainee, Secret Hottie boasts the highest Beyer Speed Figure earned on dirt or synthetic of any runner in the field. Her last-out maiden win was accomplished in wire-to-wire fashion while also racing for a $25,000 claiming tag.

Casse has promising duo in rescheduled Victoria Stakes

Into Diamonds will move to Tapeta in the Victoria after winning his career debut on the Keeneland turf.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Mark Casse will try to win the $125,000 Victoria Stakes at Woodbine for the sixth time when he sends out Into Diamonds and Mensa in the 5 1/2-furlong dash for 2-year-olds. The race was moved to Friday from last Sunday after that card was canceled due to hot weather.

Into Diamonds is the 2-1 morning-line favorite with Sahin Civaci riding for owners Gary Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. The son of leading sire Into Mischief came wide from fifth to land his 5 1/2-furlong debut in a maiden special on the grass on April 25 at Keeneland.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Brightwork was among the juvenile stars of last summer at Saratoga, winning both the Grade 3 Adirondack and Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes.

Brightwork unsuccessfully tried two turns in the Alcibiades and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies before going to the sidelines for the winter. During her time away, Brightwork had a minor chip removed from a knee. She is nearing a return to the races in the Grade 1 Test on Aug. 3, trainer John Ortiz said.

Thorpedo Anna worked five furlongs in company under Brian Hernandez Jr. on Saturday for the CCA Oaks.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Thorpedo Anna, winner of the Kentucky Oaks and Acorn Stakes already this year, on Sunday drew post 3 in a field of five entered for Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at 1 1/8 miles.

Thorpedo Anna will take on the Todd Pletcher-trained pair of Candied, a Grade 1-winning filly at 2, and Leslie’s Rose, the Grade 1 Ashland winner who finished second to Thorpedo Anna in the Acorn. Intricate, the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes winner at 2 and runner-up in two of three stakes this year, and Barbratina complete the field.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – With his Triple Crown participant Resilience sidelined until at least the fall, trainer Bill Mott is turning to some other 3-year-olds in his barn he hopes can get him to the Travers Stakes next month.

Batten Down, winner of the Grade 2 Ohio Derby in June, is targeting the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes here on July 27.

Timeout, who got his maiden victory on June 15 at Aqueduct, was one of six 3-year-olds entered in Friday’s $135,000 Curlin Stakes, a listed stakes for 3-year-olds who have not won a graded stakes at a mile or over this year.

Apprentice Erik Asmussen takes Lone Star riding title

Erik Asmussen, son of Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, won the riding title at Lone Star as an apprentice.

Apprentice jockey Erik Asmussen won the riding title at the Lone Star Park meet that closed on Sunday. He had a four-win day Saturday that included three stakes victories on the Stars of Texas Day program of five stakes races.

Asmussen won a total of 48 races to secure his first title over Harry Hernandez, who won 36 races.

Hartman has options for Necker Island

Necker Island won the Iowa Sprint at Prairie Meadows, his first win since last June at Ellis Park.

Trainer Chris Hartman’s second winner during the Iowa Festival of Racing was when Necker Island got up for a three-quarter-length win in the $100,000 Iowa Sprint. The 7-year-old millionaire was winning his first race in seven starts, dating back to his victory in the Mighty Beau last June at Ellis Park.

“It was fun to see him with his ears perked and going across the wire first,” Hartman said. “He’s had such bad luck here.

“That was real nice. He needed a victory lap, so that worked our really good for him. Everyone likes seeing the old-timers win.”

Henro likely for West Virginia Derby off Iowa Derby score

After an impressive score in the Iowa Derby over Just a Touch, Henro is likely to make his next start in the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer.

Henro could make his next start in the Grade 3, $500,000 West Virginia Derby after winning his two-turn debut in the Iowa Derby.

Trainer Chris Hartman said Saturday the Aug. 4 race at Mountaineer is a potential target for the horse, who was a head winner over Just a Touch at Prairie Meadows. Henro earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96 for his win in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Derby.

“That was a pretty serious horse he beat,” Hartman said. “That’s a nice horse.
