Coming off a two stakes day, Vives tries to stay hot with Hunt Master

Hunt Master at WO Aug 15 2022
Michael Burns
Hunt Master's first race of the year was moved from turf to Tapeta. Trainer Angus Buntain said Hunt Master is better on grass than synthetic.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sofia Vives had an eventful week.

It began when she was unseated in the slop on Monday, July 15, at Fort Erie. Unscathed, she came right back to ride the next race there. The award-winning apprentice then had a career day here Saturday when winning both the $503,000 Woodbine Oaks and Grade 2 Connaught Cup.

Vives is being reunited with Hunt Master in Thursday’s featured conditioned allowance with a $50,000 claiming option. They teamed for a front-running score over first-level allowance stock in a seven-furlong turf sprint Oct. 22.

Reincarnate preps for Pacific Classic in Cougar II; $144,919 pick six carryover

Barbara D. Livingston
Reincarnate will stretch out to 1 1/2 miles for the first time in Thursday’s Grade 3 Cougar II Stakes at Del Mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – There is more than one path to the marquee race of the Del Mar summer meet. Reincarnate will take the road less traveled, and perhaps Salesman will also.

The conventional prep for the Grade 1 Pacific Classic is the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile race on Saturday expected to include Grade 1 winners Arabian Knight and Express Train, and Group 1 winner Subsanador.

Ottoman Fleet works slow half-mile followed by a nice gallop-out

Coady Media
Ottoman Fleet was part of a Godolphin-owned, Charlie Appleby-trained group that worked Friday morning at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Ottoman Fleet, a two-time graded stakes winner in the United States this year for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, returned to the work tab Friday morning. He went a half-mile in 53.63 seconds over the Oklahoma turf course, according to Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch, but went his last quarter in 25.63 seconds and then galloped out extremely well. He is preparing for a start in either the Grade 1 Fourstardave here on Aug. 10 or a stakes at Woodbine.

Fierceness remains at Saratoga for Jim Dandy

Barbara D. Livingston
With his stablemate Mindframe expected for the Haskell at Monmouth on Saturday, Fierceness is expected for the Travers at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though he is entered in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park, Fierceness remained in Saratoga while his Todd Pletcher-trained stablemates Mindframe and Tuscan Sky were put on a van early Friday morning bound for Monmouth Park.

Provided there was no hiccup for Mindframe at Monmouth Saturday morning – à la the fever that forced Pletcher to scratch Mentee from the July 13 Sanford Stakes – then the Belmont Stakes runner-up will run in the Haskell and Fierceness will run in next Saturday’s Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes.

Kingsbarns to bypass Whitney for Jockey Club Gold Cup

Debra A. Roma
With the Breeders' Cup Classic as the year-end goal, Kingsbarns will start in the Jockey Club Gold Cup instead of the Whitney.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Kingsbarns, the Grade 1 Stephen Foster winner, returned to the work tab Friday morning in Saratoga but he will bypass the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes here on Aug. 3 and point to the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Sept. 1, trainer Todd Pletcher said.

Pletcher said the Jockey Club, at 1 1/4 miles, will be used as a stepping-stone to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 1.

Shuvee's lack of pace puts Shotgun Hottie in driver's seat

Shotgun Hottie at SAR July 19 2024
Debra A. Roma
Shotgun Hottie, shown at Saratoga on Friday, should be prominent from the start in the 1 1/8-mile Shuvee Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Shotgun Hottie won the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park last summer and her mid-season goal for 2024 was a return visit to the Jersey Shore for that same $500,000 stakes run over the weekend.

That was until word came out that Idiomatic, last year’s champion older female, was running in that race.

Thus, Shotgun Hottie shows up in Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga, where she figures to go off the favorite against four opponents in the 1 1/8-mile race.

Your So Sillea at top of her game for Twin Bridges Stakes

Your So Sillea wins at CD June 16 2024
Coady Media
Your So Sillea wins her most recent start at Churchill. She has paired up career-best 92 Beyer Speed Figures in her last two races.

The last time she ran in a stakes race things didn’t go especially well for the 5-year-old mare Your So Sillea. The last time she raced at Ellis Park they went even worse. But if Your So Sillea runs to her current form – and there’s no obvious reason to believe she won’t – she’ll win the $125,000 Twin Bridges Stakes on Monday at Ellis.

Carded at six furlongs on dirt for older fillies and mares, the Twin Bridges drew a moderate field of eight. Your So Sillea ought to be favored, with Non Violence, the runner-up in this race a year ago, the second choice.

Sparkle Blue drops for Big Dreyfus repeat bid

Julie Wright
Sparkle Blue won last year's Big Dreyfus and will look to repeat Sunday at Laurel.

Sparkle Blue seeks to capture Laurel Park’s $100,000 Big Dreyfus Stakes for the second consecutive year when she starts as the likely favorite against six other fillies and mares racing 1 1/8 miles on turf.

The Big Dreyfus shares top billing on the Sunday program with the $75,000 Miss Disco for Maryland-bred 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs on dirt.

L'Imperator, Abaan meet again in delayed A.P. Smithwick

Barbara D. Livingston
Coming off his first Grade 1 jump win, L'Imperator gets another crack at Abaan in Sunday's rescheduled A.P. Smithwick at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Abaan has defeated L’Imperator the previous two times they have met. Arch Kingsley, the trainer of L’Imperator, believes his horse could flip the script Sunday at Saratoga when the two meet again in the Grade 1, $150,000 A.P. Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase going 2 3/8 miles over National fences.

The Smithwick was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was postponed when rain forced that card’s races off the turf.
