Thoroughbred blood still courses through top contenders at Paris Olympics

There may be very few pure Thoroughbreds competing at the Olympics this year, but that doesn’t mean the breed won’t play a role in the Paris Games, which kick off with the opening ceremony on Friday. Several horses competing in eventing, for which competition begins Saturday, have Thoroughbred relatives – including two horses on the powerhouse German team who have Thoroughbred broodmare sires.

No Show Sammy Jo finally gets to make her return

Adam Colgianese/NYRA
No Show Sammy Jo will return for Thursday's allowance feature at Colonial, going 1 1/16 over the turf course.

You’re wondering why No Show Sammy Jo has been a no-show in an actual horse race since making her 4-year-old debut on May 19 at Aqueduct? You’re thinking that the most recent layoff suggests the filly could be vulnerable as the likely favorite in the featured sixth race Thursday at Colonial Downs?

The layoff has nothing to do with soundness or race-readiness. And No Show Tammy Jo is a very likely winner of the Colonial feature, a second-level allowance with a $50,000 claiming option restricted to older fillies and mares carded for 1 1/16 miles on turf.

Chancery Way has developed a niche in minor stakes or California-bred stakes in the last two years, winning five sprints at Del Mar, Golden Gate Fields, Pleasanton, and Sacramento.

The most recent of those was a commanding 3 1/2-length win in the $66,250 Governor’s Cup Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs at Cal-Expo in Sacramento on Saturday evening, a win that ended a three-race losing streak.

The connections of the up-and-coming sprinter Subrogate have called an audible and will run in Saturday’s Grade 1, $350,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga instead of Sunday’s $150,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel, trainer Jorge Duarte Jr. said Monday.
