Just F Y I turned out for the summer

Barbara D. Livingston
Just F Y I, the juvenile filly champion of 2023, is expected to race next year at age 4.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Just F Y I, the 2-year-old filly champion of 2023, has been turned out for the summer and will likely be aimed at a 4-year-old campaign, trainer Bill Mott said Friday.

Just F Y I is currently at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, where she will likely remain out of training through the end of August.

Mott said since Just F Y I “can’t be ready for the Breeders’ Cup” he would like to just focus on a 4-year-old campaign, though he didn’t rule out having her ready for something in late fall.

Hezgothelook Z brings gate speed to Rainbow Futurity

The volatile weather pattern that’s ripped through the Ruidoso Downs area the past month was a sobering reminder life is bigger than racing, and Toby Keeton, trainer of favorite Hezgothelook Z in Sunday’s Grade 1, $1 million Rainbow Futurity, experienced firsthand the community pulling together during the wildfires and floods that have disrupted the meet in New Mexico.

“It’s been unbelievable,” he said. “People that really didn’t have anything to give, they gave. The mayor is doing anything and everything he can do. Everyone in this town is coming together.”

Haskell likely to feature three Grade 1 winners

Barbara D. Livingston
With a win in the Belmont, Dornoch is the newest Grade 1 winner in the possible group of three for the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth.

Monmouth’s signature race of the season, the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 20, could lure as many as three Grade 1 winners when the race is drawn Wednesday – and that doesn’t even include Mindframe, who has yet to win a stakes race of any sort, yet probably would’ve won the Belmont, if not for inexperience.

Presumed starters in the 1 1/8-mile Haskell as of Friday include Dornoch, who actually did win the Belmont, adding that prize to Grade 2 victories in the Remsen and Fountain of Youth, and locally based Sea Streak, entirely unproven at this class.

Pandagate stands out among statebreds in New York Derby

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Pandagate, back from a third-place finish in the U.A.E. Derby, will headline the New York Derby for statebreds going 1 1/16 miles at Finger Lakes on Monday.

New York-bred Pandagate traveled to Dubai in March for the Group 2 U.A.E. Derby, where he finished third behind Japan’s Forever Young – the eventual Kentucky Derby third-place finisher.

“He ran great,” trainer Christophe Clement said. “The question is: Do I have him back to that level or not?”

Warrior Johny's four-length victory on Thursday snapped a seven-race losing streak by the 5-year-old gelding.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – After turning in a trio of subpar performances to close out his 2023 campaign, trainer Phil Bauer didn’t know where he was at with Warrior Johny. But the veteran horseman is now pretty certain where he stands after watching Warrior Johny dominate a stakes-caliber field of older allowance horses by four lengths on opening day of the Saratoga season.

Forever Souper due for a trip in Prince George's County on three-stakes card

Tom Keyser
Forever Souper wins the Turf Classic at Tampa Bay Downs in March. He has had traffic problems in his last two starts.

After finishing third as the favorite in his last two starts, Forever Souper looks to rebound Sunday in the $100,000 Prince George’s County going 1 1/8 miles on turf at Laurel Park.

The Prince George’s County is one of three stakes, along with the Jameela for fillies and mares and the Ben’s Cat, on Sunday's card. The Jameela and Ben’s Cat are six-furlong turf sprints restricted to Maryland-bred or -sired performers.

Appeal Factor brings perfect record into Kent Stakes

Appeal Factor will bid to maintain her perfect record – three stakes appearances and three wins – in Sunday’s $50,000 Kent Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs at Emerald Downs.

The daughter of The Factor’s 2024 debut in last month’s Seattle Stakes was deceptively good in that she was hard used early while still retaining enough for a 1 1/2-length victory.

Tiffany Gold, 2 for 2 in her career, will make her stakes debut in the Blue Sparkler if the race remains on the grass.

Tiffany Gold sharply won her first two races, including a turf-sprint allowance romp second time out, but her intended stakes debut could fall victim to a wet weekend at Monmouth Park.

Tiffany Gold was among 10 3-year-old fillies entered in the Blue Sparkler Stakes, a 5 1/2-furlong grass race that could easily wind up on dirt if a rainy forecast Friday into Saturday holds.

Rescheduled handicaps draw competitive fields

Susie Raisher/NYRA
Kodiac Wintergreen should get his wanted frim turf for Saturday's Horseshoe Indianapolis Handicap.

Two months later than originally intended, Horseshoe Indianapolis hosts a pair of $150,000 turf stakes races for 3-year-olds Saturday.

The Horseshoe Indianapolis Handicap over one mile for fillies and the Caesars Handicap, run at the same distance with no sex restriction, were carded May 21, but heavy rain the night before and the morning of that program caused Horseshoe Indianapolis to cancel. Racing secretary Chris Polzin searched for the right time to reschedule the races, and here they are on a Saturday evening card.
