Zoeling upsets Whistle Pig in Leemat

Zoeling put in a huge effort Friday evening to take the $75,000 Leemat at Presque Isle Downs. After being third early under Florent Geroux, the Favorite Trick gelding took over on the turn. Heavily favored Whistle Pig briefly led in the stretch, but the Doug Matthews trainee dug in to prevail by three-quarters of a length. Whistle Pig held off Anaan by a neck to be second. The running time of the six furlongs over the Tapeta surface was 1:10.24, and Zoeling returned $7 to win.

In the penultimate event of the evening, Ariana D drew off to win by 11 lengths in the $75,000 Northern Fling. Trained by Merrill Scherer, the 4-year-old extended her lead through the stretch to win impressively under Harry Vega Jr. Sky Haven gained late to finish second, 4 3/4 lengths in front of Our Gala Place in third. Ariana D returned $3.80 to win and ran the six furlongs in 1:10.68.
