Zindaya all the way in License Fee Stakes

Pace made the race in Friday’s $100,000 License Fee Stakes at Belmont Park, as Zindaya grabbed the lead from the inside post and led her seven rivals in a merry chase – including her uncoupled stablemate Annecdote, who could only manage fourth as the 3-2 favorite.
Outsprinted in her seasonal debut going five furlongs at Gulfstream Park, Zindaya ($7.30) got a more favorable scenario in her return to Belmont, where she posted a first-level allowance win last fall for trainer Christophe Clement. She was able to control the tempo beneath Manuel Franco by setting fractions of 22.02 and 45.70 seconds, comparatively modest splits based on times recorded during the first few days of the meet.
“The plan worked out good,” said Franco. “[Clement] told me if somebody wants to go, just let them, and you sit back; if not, then take the lead. I didn’t expect to make the lead that easily, and she finished strong.”
Zindaya, a 4-year-old filly by More Than Ready, remained clear at the wire by 2 3/4 lengths over 17-1 longshot Devilish Love, who edged Dauphine Russe for the runner-up spot by three-quarters of a length. Annecdote, who won the Noble Damsel at Belmont in her U.S. debut for Clement last fall, checked in fourth, beaten five lengths.
“She’s a nice filly,” Clement said of the winner. “She was unlucky at Gulfstream, and she won very well today. Manny gave us a great ride, so I’m delighted. She belongs to Regis Farm, a new owner, and I’m delighted to do well for them and aim for the long term. It’s exciting.”
