Zia Park: Culpeper Moon upsets

Mary Rampellini|Oct 10, 2005

Culpeper Moon became a stakes winner when she upset the favorite, Dee Dee's Diner, by 1 3/4 lOwner-trainer William Campbell took home $337,500 of the $450,000 purse for the West Virginia Breeders Classic on Saturday at Charles Town, when his entry of Speed Whiz and Slew's Smile finished one-two.

A Huevo, the 1-2 favorite who won the Classic by 19 1/4 lengths last year, was pulled up early in the race and later euthanized.

The West Virginia Breeders Classics card comprised eight stakes, all for West Virginia-bred or -sired horses, worth a total of $1,080,000.

Slew's Smile set the table for Speed Whiz in the three-turn, 1 1/8-mile Classic by dueling with Brigader through fractions of 23.04 seconds, 48.28, and 1:13.93 over a sloppy track. Speed Whiz and jockey Anthony Mawing caught the leaders as they turned into the stretch and won by 7 1/2 lengths in 1:52.65. Sheckatoo came from far back to take third, a half-length behind Slew's Smile.

A Huevo, trained by Michael Dickinson and ridden by Ramon Dominguez, looked uncomfortable from the start and was pulled up before the field crossed the finish line the first time. A Huevo, 9, who had not run since December, was later euthanized.

Speed Whiz, a 4-year-old gelding by Weshaam, paid $9.60. The win was the third in a row for Speed Whiz, who had been claimed by Campbell for $15,000 four starts ago.

Original Gold ($3) won the $225,000 Cavada Breeders Classic for the second straight year.

Winners of the other stakes, each worth $67,500, were:

* Standing for Peace ($9.80) in the Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic.

* Bryceslittlesecret ($3) in the West Virginia Lottery Breeders Classic.

* King Cohl ($6.80) in the Vincent Moscarelli Breeders Classic.

* Not for Sam ($3) in the Dash for Cash Breeders Classic.

* Spindini ($16) in the Onion Juice Breeders Classic.

* Bravura ($7.20) in the West Virginia Division of Tourism Breeders Classic.engths in the $50,000 Zia Park Distaff. It was another half-length back in third to Ladysgotthelooks.

Culpeper Moon ($19.60), ridden by Carlos Madeira for trainer Joel Marr, finished the six furlongs for fillies and mares in 1:10.20.
