ARCADIA, Calif.-  The recent death of a War Front colt out of Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year, has left the popular mare with two surviving foals – the active racehorses Cozmic One and Ziconic. Trainer John Shirreffs said over the weekend that he is hopeful both can start in maiden races at Santa Anita in May for owners and breeders Jerry and Ann Moss, who campaigned the immensely popular Zenyatta. The 4-year-old Cozmic One, by Bernardini, is winless in two starts in maiden races in 2015. The 3-year-old Ziconic, by Tapit, lost his first two career starts this year. Both are working toward upcoming maiden races, Shirreffs said. Cozmic One has not raced since finishing seventh at Belmont Park last June. “Cozmic One is a work in progress,” Shirreffs said. “He’s working faster than before. We’re hoping he’ll find another gear. If he finds another gear, he’ll be a serious horse.” Ziconic worked a half-mile in 47.60 seconds at Santa Anita last Thursday. Ziconic was fifth in a maiden race at Santa Anita on March 25, a race that Shirreffs dismissed.  “He’s doing really well,” Shirreffs said. “I think the last race was a fluke.” Cozmic One and Ziconic were Zenyatta’s first two foals. Her 2014 filly, by War Front, was euthanized as a weaning because of a paddock accident. She was not bred the next breeding season and therefore does not have a yearling. The War Front colt died on April 13 after complications of meconium aspiration syndrome, a respiratory disorder.
