Zenyatta delivers Candy Ride filly

Barbara D. Livingston Zenyatta lost her pregnancy in April after suffering an inflammation of the placenta.

Two foals with close connections to champions arrived over the weekend in Kentucky.

Love the Chase, dam of 2014 and 2016 Horse of the Year California Chrome, delivered a colt from the first crop of Accelerate on Saturday at Atlas Farm in Nicholasville. One day later, 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta delivered a filly by leading sire Candy Ride at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles.

Both Candy Ride, the sire of champions including 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner, and Accelerate, the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Eclipse Award champion older male, stand at Lane’s End.

Zenyatta, who is boarded at Lane’s End for owners Jerry and Ann Moss, won 13 Grade 1 races, including the 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies’ Classic and 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic. In addition to her Horse of the Year title, she was the Eclipse Award winner as outstanding older female three straight years. The daughter of Street Cry is the dam of two starters, Cozmic One and Ziconic, both winless.

Zenyatta has been plagued by bad luck as a broodmare, producing only three foals to date who have survived past their weanling stage; the most recent of those is the 3-year-old filly Zellda, now in training in California. Zenyatta was not bred for the 2019 foaling season after aborting a foal by Into Mischief the year prior.

California Chrome is the lone stakes horse out of the Not for Love mare Love the Chase, dam of four winners from five starters. The two-time Horse of the Year, who also earned a pair of Eclipse titles as outstanding 3-year-old and outstanding older horse, won seven Grade/Group 1 events, highlighted by the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes and 2016 Dubai World Cup. California Chrome, who currently stands in Japan, is among the freshman sires of this season.

The other recent foals out of Love the Chase, who was purchased by John McCormack Bloodstock for $1.95 million at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, are Fort McHenry, a winning 3-year-old; an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Pioneerof the Nile; and a yearling Uncle Mo filly.
