OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The list of Demoiselle winners trained by Todd Pletcher is long and storied, one that includes subsequent champions Ashado, Malathaat, and Nest.  It may be too early to declare Zany a future champion, but on Saturday at Aqueduct she certainly looked like a future star as she dominated the Grade 2, $250,000 Demoiselle by 8 1/2 lengths. It gave Pletcher his 10th victory in this 1 1/8-mile race for 2-year-old fillies.  “Man I hope so,” Pletcher said when asked if Zany could enter that elite class of fillies he’s trained. “It’s been a race that for us has not only been lucky on the day, but has produced some horses that have gone on and done very well.”  Ashado and Malathaat won the Demoiselle on their way to eventually winning the Kentucky Oaks as 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs. Both horses also won Eclipse Awards as older females. By winning the Demoiselle, Zany earned 10 qualifying points toward next May’s Kentucky Oaks.  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Zany, a daughter of American Pharoah, won her debut going 6 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 2 and owner Mike Repole immediately mentioned the Demoiselle as a spot to run in next. Pletcher said his decision was finalized after he watched Zany’s last workout at Palm Beach Downs on Nov. 28.  “The work before we shipped up here, she galloped like she was wanting more ground,” Pletcher said.  In the Demoiselle, Zany, under Irad Ortiz Jr., took up a stalking position, about a length behind Tempted Stakes winner Shilling, who set modest fractions of 24.05 seconds for the quarter, 48.16 for the half-mile and 1:12.46 for six furlongs. Zany took over approaching the top of the stretch and drew off impressively.  Jumping the Gun rallied from fourth to get second by a neck over Concurrently. It was 3 1/2 lengths back to Shilling, who was followed by Believable and Ivy Girl.  “She did it the right way every step of the way,” Ortiz said. “She broke good, put me in a beautiful spot so I let her do whatever she wanted to do and she just held her ground, stayed steady until I asked her to go and she was doing it pretty easy. When she made the lead, she was looking around a little bit, but it was impressive the way she did it today.”  Zany, out of the graded-stakes winning dam Mo’ Green, covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.55 (89 Beyer Speed Figure) and returned $3.50 as 3-5 favorite.  “She really dominated and after the wire she still had more in her,” Pletcher said.  As satisfied as he was with Zany, Pletcher was disappointed in Believable’s fifth-place finish. Pletcher had added blinkers to Believable following her runner-up finish in the Tempted Stakes.  “Disappointed,” Pletcher said. “I thought the blinkers did a good job of putting her into a good position but it looked like at the three-eighths pole she was starting to retreat.”  Zany will ship back to Palm Beach Downs this week and Pletcher will map out a campaign to get to the Kentucky Oaks. He mentioned the Grade 1 Ashland typically run at Keeneland the first weekend in April as a race that would likely be on Zany’s 2026 calendar.  Pletcher has won that race three of the last four years. It wouldn’t be crazy to think he could win it again in 2026.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
