You See That the lone Casselman runner in Governor's Cup
The improving Quarter Horse colt You See That has gone from being one of trainer Mike Casselman’s three qualifiers for Saturday’s $255,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos to the stable’s only runner.
Casselman won a division of the trials July 8 with Market Analyst, who set the fastest qualifying time. A filly, Market Analyst will not start in the final after she was found to have bled.
Sassperilla, another filly trained by Casselman, qualified for the final after finishing second in a trial, but will miss the race because of injury.
The gelding Xpensive, second to You See That in the trials, will miss the final for trainer Jose Flores, reportedly because of injury.
Market Analyst has been turned out until the autumn at the earliest, Casselman said.
Their absences leave a field of seven in the 350-yard Governor’s Cup Futurity, the richest of five stakes on Saturday’s 10-race program.

You See That will break from the rail, while his leading rival, Wilde Thing, starts from the outside.
You See That, owned and bred by Casselman, has won 2 of 3 starts. After finishing third in a maiden race in May, You See That won a 300-yard maiden race on June 4 and a division of the Governor’s Cup trials in his first start at 350 yards.
“He’s a quiet horse,” Casselman said. “Nothing seems to bother him.”
Jose Nicasio rode You See That for the first time in the Governor’s Cup trials, and has the mount in the final. Casselman said an inside post may help You See That.
“Maybe there’s a chance that it takes away an opportunity for someone to run into you” at the start, Casselman said. “He’s good in the gate and has been breaking okay.”
You See That was timed in 18 seconds in the trials. Wilde Thing, trained by Cesar DeAlba, was timed in 17.85 seconds, winning for the second time in three starts. Wild Thing was second in a maiden race in his debut in May and won a maiden race on June 10.
“I think Wilde Thing is probably the one to outrun,” Casselman said.
Wild Thing will be ridden by Diego Herrera, who rides both Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds in Southern California. Herrera, 19, has five mounts at Del Mar on Saturday and rides two Quarter Horse stakes at Los Alamitos in the evening.
In the race before the Governor’s Cup Futurity, the 6-year-old gelding Cattail Cove can win his second consecutive stakes in the $100,000 Spencer Childers Handicap at 400 yards.
Cattail Cover won the minor Independence Day Handicap at 300 yards on July 1 by a nose over Stuck in Probate, who is part of the Childers field.
The race drew eight, including London Toby and Jess Being a Friend, who were fourth and seventh behind 2022 World Champion Empresum in the $150,000 Vessels Maturity at 400 yards on July 2.
