Yonkers: Shartin sharp in Open Handicap win
With the stakes schedule getting slashed in 2020 due to COVID-19, many top horses are looking for a place to race and Horse of the Year Shartin N landed at Yonkers Raceway on Tuesday night for the $33,000 Open Handicap.
It was archrival and 2019 Breeders Crown champion Caviart Ally who controlled the action ahead of pocket-sitter Snobbytown through fractions of 27 4/5 and 57 2/5 as Shartin N watching patiently from fourth after an early tuck. As the fraction popped on the board for the half, driver Tim Tetrick edged the 7-year-old Shartin N to the rim and she immediately grabbed ahold of the bit and took dead aim, engaging Caviart Ally on the backstretch before three-quarters in 1:24 3/5.
Shartin N had a length lead at the head of the stretch and would maintain that advantage. Tetrick never raised the whip as he simply shook the lines once or twice in the 1:52 winning mile. The margin of victory was a comfortable length over Snobbytown in second and Caviart Ally third.
"They were going slow to the half, but she was ready," said Tetrick.
Shartin N, who is trained by Jim King, Jr. for owners Richard Poillucci, JoAnn Looney-King and Tetrick, is now perfect in two starts this year and increased her career win total to 43 in 58 starts.
