Yonkers: Shartin, Bettor Joy give connections a double in leg three of the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series

Driver (and co-owner) Tim Tetrick, co-owners Richard Poillucci and Jo Ann Looney-King, and trainer Jim King Jr. teamed up to win two of the four $40,000 divisions of the third round of the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series for pacing mares on Friday night at Yonkers Raceway with New Zealand imports Bettor Joy and Shartin.
Dan Patch Award winner and defending series champion Shartin, who had a terrible trip from post eight last week and wound up fourth after winning in the first round of the series, rebounded nicely by winning the last grouping in 1:52 2/5. Starting from post three in the field of seven, she worked her way to the point past the 27 1/5 opening quarter and would go on to hit the half in 56 seconds and the three-quarters in 1:24 3/5. Shartin disposed of the field in the final quarter, kicking out a 27 4/5 last panel to win by three lengths over a pylon-skimming Kaitlyn (Matt Kakaley). Caviart Cherie (Joe Bongiorno) finished in the third spot.
A 6-year-old daughter of Tintin In America, Shartin scored her 28th career victory, and she has now earned $1,172,553. The 1-9 favorite, Shartin paid $2.20 to win.
Shartin's stablemate Bettor Joy backed up her win from last Friday night with a 1:52 3/5 score in this week's second split. She made front from post six, clicked off fractions of 27 3/5, 56 2/5, and 1:24 4/5, and went on to prevail by 3 1/4 lengths over Ideal Lifestyle (George Brennan). Lispatty (Mark MacDonald) held third after a pocket trip.
The victorious 5-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight is now a 13-time winner, and she shows $280,484 in earnings. The 3-5 favorite, she returned $3.50 to win.
Round one winner Seaswift Joy (Jim Marohn Jr.) made it a trio of wins for New Zealand-breds by taking the third section in 1:52 4/5. She yielded to Dont Think Twice (Jason Bartlett) going to the 27 3/5 opening quarter, continued to stalk from the pocket through middle-half stations of 57 3/5 and 1:25 2/5, then ripped out of the two-hole in the lane and out-sprinted the long-time leader to tally by half a length. Betterb Chevron (Jordan Stratton) collected third.
Trained by Tony Alagna, Seaswift Joy is a 6-year-old Bettor's Delight mare owned by Brad Grant. She made her 15th appearance in the winner's circle, and she has pocketed $168,859. She was the 8-5 second choice and paid $5.20 to win.
Apple Bottom Jeans (Corey Callahan) came into Friday night's action the only mare two-for-two in the Blue Chip Matchmaker Series, but she couldn't maintain her perfect mark, as she was downed by Feelin Red Hot (Brennan) in a 1:53 1/5 mile. Feelin Red Hot, who won the split Shartin had all the traffic trouble in last week, showed that performance was no fluke, following Apple Bottom Jeans from the pocket through fractions of 27 2/5, 58, and 1:25 4/5, then out-footing the 1-5 favorite to win by a neck. Medusa (Marohn Jr.) took third.
Feelin Red Hot, a 6-year-old daughter of Feelin Friskie, is trained by Ron Burke for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC. and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. She now has 24 lifetime wins, and she has now banked $320,479. A 9-2 offering, she returned $11.60 to win.
