Yockey's Warrior possible for Count Fleet
RACE REPLAY IS NOT AVAILABLE
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Yockey’s Warrior, who was a powerful allowance winner Feb. 17 at Oaklawn in his first start since winning the Thanksgiving Handicap at Fair Grounds, could be back for a major sprint stakes. Trainer Al Stall Jr. said Monday that Yockey’s Warrior is possible for the Grade 3, $400,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap on April 15.
“We shipped him back to New Orleans,” Stall said. “We’ll consider the Count Fleet.”
Yockey’s Warrior covered six furlongs in 1:09.20 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 94. He’s now 2 for 3 at Oaklawn.
Yockey’s Warrior was making his first start since a 2 1/4-length victory in the Thanksgiving Handicap on Nov. 24 at Fair Grounds. Stall said the horse would not be considered for the next sprint stakes at Oaklawn, the Hot Springs in March.
“We’re trying to keep him in form throughout the whole year, so we’re going to give him some time between races,” Stall said. “He clearly performs with some time, so we’re just going to stick with that.”
Stall co-owns Yockey’s Warrior with Stewart Madison, Steve Landry, Joel Broussard, and Matt Bernard. Yockey’s Warrior is named for Bernard’s late father, who was nicknamed Yockey.
