Yo Y Me must overcome wide draw in Colorado Derby

Mary Rampellini|Jul 14, 2017
Yo Y Me wins the Gene Fleming Breeders' Derby
Coady Photography Yo Y Me puts his five-race winning streak on the line in Sunday's Inaugural Stakes at Arapahoe.

Yo Y Me will have to overcome the widest post as well as nine rivals on Sunday, when he starts as the probable favorite in the $30,000 Colorado Derby at Arapahoe Park. The horse is invading for the 1 1/16-mile race that also drew Way Out West, the winner of last month’s Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders Association Derby.

Yo Y Me is a four-time stakes winner who has been working at Prairie Meadows. He will be stretching back out to two turns for the Colorado Derby, and his natural speed should serve him well as he seeks to establish position from post 10.

KEY CONTENDERS

Yo Y Me, by Dixie Chatter
Last 3 Beyers: 65-69-66

◗ He was third last out in the $30,000 Inaugural at Arapahoe, a six-furlong race May 21 in which he set the pace. The start came on the turnback from a win at 1 1/16 miles in the Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby on April 22 at Turf Paradise.

◗ Yo Y Me has established himself as a leading Arizona-bred by winning five straight races at Turf Paradise, including three restricted stakes. His streak ran from October through the Gene Fleming Derby.

◗ Scott Stevens has the mount for trainer Kevin Eikleberry, who also shares ownership of the horse with William Matthews and J. Lloyd Yother.

Way Out West, by Fusaichi Pegasus
Last 3 Beyers: 61-55-47

◗ He won the CTBA Derby on June 24 at Arapahoe in his two-turn debut, tracking the pace, then moving to a one-length win over Whiskeydrunkagain, who also returns in the Colorado Derby.

◗ Way Out West has won three stakes races, including scores at Arapahoe last year at 2 in the CTBA Futurity and the Silver Cup Futurity.

◗ David Cardoso has the mount from post 3 for trainer Tyrone Gleason.
