The unbeaten Paving will attempt to close out her first season of racing with a win around two turns Saturday in the $150,000 Year’s End, the feature race on an Oaklawn Park card made up exclusively of 2-year-old races. There are a total of 106 juveniles entered across 10 races worth a cumulative $900,000. The lineup includes eight maiden races and a $50,000 starter allowance. The Year’s End is for 2-year-old fillies at a mile. Paving is part of a competitive field of nine that includes Scot’s Law, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Scottish Lassie; Counting Stars, winner of the Astral Spa overnight stakes at Oaklawn; and Authentic Cat, who was an impressive debut winner for two-time Year’s End-winning trainer Kenny McPeek. Paving is perfect in two starts for Tom Amoss. Her debut came in a maiden special weight over six furlongs Aug. 23 at Ellis Park and her most recent score at the same distance in an entry-level allowance on Dec. 4 at Fair Grounds. Amoss is hopeful she will be as effective around two turns Saturday. :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. “Sometimes you can get fooled by a horse’s style, but in her last race she got left at the gate and had to come from well back,” he said. “And even in her debut, which is going back to the summer at Ellis, she was a horse that settled well and finished up on the end. So I think that that’s attractive for her to go a distance of ground. She deserves a chance to show what she can do, and it opens up a world of possibility if it works out.” Paving has other qualities that have contributed to her sharp form, including pedigree. “She’s by Gun Runner, and having said that, you’re talking about a sire that really puts out some horses that try, and so she tries,” Amoss said. “She’s very, very competitive as far as that goes. Yes, it’s a step up [Saturday], no question about it, but she deserves it.” Amoss added that Paving’s last-out win came over Luv Your Neighbor, who returned in her next start to finish second by a head in the Untapable Stakes at Fair Grounds last Saturday. “That’s an encouraging sign as well,” he said. Paving’s sire, who is in the Hall of Fame, has a total of seven runners entered on the card Saturday. Paving is out of the stakes-winning mare Point System, who is by Broken Vow. Paving races for the Highlander Training Center operation of her breeder, Larry Hirsch. Ramon Vazquez has the mount from post 5. Copper Wind is a second Gun Runner filly in the Year’s End. She goes for Winchell Thoroughbreds, who raced $15 million earner Gun Runner, and Steve Asmussen, who trained the horse. Copper Wind enters off a debut victory over six furlongs on Nov. 20 at Fair Grounds. Scot’s Law was a debut winner at Churchill Downs in September. Two starts later, she won her two-turn debut at the track in a first-level allowance. Her half-sister, Scottish Lassie, won the Grade 1 Frizette at 2. Luis Saez has the mount on Scot’s Law from post 2 for Millard R. Seldin Revocable Trust and trainer John Ortiz. Sticker Shocked, a half-sister to Oaklawn stakes winner Take Charge Milady; Counting Stars; and Authentic Cat were all supplemented to the Year’s End. :: Get the Inside Track with the FREE DRF Morning Line Email Newsletter. Amoss said a major draw is the Oaklawn purse structure, where maiden special weight races will be worth $100,000 on Saturday. “With what we’re investing at the Keeneland sales every year, which is significant, we want to make those purses for our clients as rewarding as possible,” he said. Amoss trainee Charted Destiny, a $525,000 yearling purchase in 2024 at Keeneland September, makes her debut in the seventh race, a maiden special weight for fillies at six furlongs. She is by Liam’s Map and races for Greenwell Thoroughbreds. “Charted Destiny, she’s taken a little longer to get ready to run than some of the ones that ran this summer,” Amoss said Monday. “But she’s a horse that’s doing well and deserves a chance in a maiden allowance-type race, so that’s why we’re there.” Joke Maker, who was third in the Grade 3 Pocahontas in September at Churchill, will get good support in the same race. The field also includes Izzy’s Gunna Run, a daughter of Gun Runner and the Grade 2-winning mare Isabella Sings. The fifth race drew a full sister to Haulin Ice, the all-time leading Arkansas-bred earner with a bankroll of $978,650. She’s So Coal is by Coal Front and out of the mare She’s Smoke. She’s So Coal will be moving to two turns after finishing ninth in a quick maiden special weight sprint in her Nov. 13 debut at Churchill. She will be making her first start against Arkansas-breds in the maiden special weight for fillies at a mile for breeder and owner Eugenia Thompson Benight and trainer Lindsay Schultz. Edzo Said So, a half-brother to millionaire Melmich and Grade 2 winner Iliad, debuts in the fourth race. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
