ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A total of 466 yearlings have been cataloged for the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society’s annual yearling sale this year. The selected session, with 225 head up for bids, will be held Tuesday, and the open session on Thursday has 241 yearlings on the block. Both sessions will begin at 2 p.m. at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion.Offspring of a host of prominent American sires are in the sale, including Afleet Alex, Candy Ride, City Zip, E Dubai, Exchange Rate, Fusaichi Pegasus, Giant’s Causeway, Grand Slam, Langfuhr, Lemon Drop Kid, Northern Afleet, Quiet American, Stormy Atlantic, and Thunder Gulch.Leading Ontario sires Bold Executive, Peaks and Valleys, Mobil, and Where’s the Ring are represented, along with the hot freshman sires Old Forester and Philanthropist.Major consignors include Anderson Farms, Michael C. Byrne, Cara Bloodstock, Beth Hancock, Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, Richard Hogan, Huntington Stud Farm, Sam-Son Farm, Spring Farm and Woodlands.All graduates from the sale will be eligible for a series of $125,000 stakes that are held on each Labor Day. Beginning next year, the purses for the two 2-year-old stakes, the Simcoe and Muskoka, will be increased from $125,000 to $200,000.“I believe we have a strong catalogue this year, just from the amount of interest we’ve received, and we’re expecting an excellent sale,” said Julie Coulter, general manager of the horse society.
