Wynyard fast, but fast enough?

Ron Gierkink|Mar 22, 2002

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wynyard, who finished second in a first-level allowance at Gulfstream Park during the winter, should be favored in Sunday's seventh race at Woodbine, a $59,100 allowance for 3-year-old fillies.

Wynward, a half-sister to stakes winners Dixieland Slew and

A Perfectredransom, was a $170,000 2-year-old purchase by owners Jim and Alice Sapara. She had local workout watchers buzzing before her debut last summer, but lost her first two starts, both times as the favorite.

Wynyard won her maiden here Nov. 4 as a front-runner following a short layoff and with the addition of Lasix, but was a fading fifth after getting away slowly in a subsequent allowance race.

Trainer Josie Carroll had Wynyard primed to run a corker at Gulfstream Jan. 9. She set fractions of 21.80 seconds and 44.60 in that six-furlong race, looked the part of a winner at the eighth pole, but was overhauled in the final strides. She earned a solid 80 Beyer Speed Figure.

Most recently, in another preliminary allowance at Gulfstream on Feb. 24, Wynyard was outsprinted for the early lead and then struggled to play catch-up. She finished third behind Miss Dixie Chick and Dynamite Miss.

Shortening up to five furlongs could be the main obstacle Sunday for Wynyard, who may have to work hard to get to where she wants to be: on the early lead.

Emile Ramsammy will break Wynyard from the inside post in the nine-horse field.

Other contenders include comebackers Estrada and Tacky Affair, both first-out winners going five furlongs in October.

Estrada rallied along a dead rail to finish third in her only other juvenile appearance, in the seven-furlong Glorious Song Stakes. She has worked regularly this month for trainer Scotty McCulloch.

Tacky Affair hit the board in allowance company twice in November, earning a 70-plus Beyer on each occasion. She rallied four wide over an inside-biased track to end up second in one of those races. David Bell trains.

Completing the seventh-race lineup are Misty Expectation, Sweep Easy, Elusive Ashlee, Debi's Sportscar, Princess Atta, and Ten Rebels.

Speed will be at a premium in Sunday's co-feature, a $59,100 preliminary allowance for 4-year-olds and up at five furlongs.

Stubsy, Wildisthewind, and Mr. Chipping all want the front end, which could set the table for a stalking Deputy Ruler.
