Wrenice tries for six in a row

Mary Rampellini|Jan 24, 2007

Wrenice has scared off the competition in Texas, so now she has come to Louisiana. A winner of her last five starts by a combined 40 lengths, Wrenice will make her two-turn debut Friday night at Delta Downs in the $50,000 Genesis.

The race is one of two stakes on the card, with 3-year-old colts also set to go two turns in the $50,000 Triple Sec.

Wrenice, a 3-year-old filly, had been entered in overnight stakes on consecutive weekends at her home base of Sam Houston Race Park earlier this month, but neither race filled, including one against colts. The next plan of action was the Genesis, in part because the 6 1/2-furlong race, run at two turns, serves as a nice transition to longer races, said Randy Mayfield, who trains Wrenice.

"So that will give her a little education about going around two turns," he said.

Wrenice's major winter goal is a one-mile division of the $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes at Sam Houston on Feb. 17. Before then, the intent is to keep intact her streak, which began last July when she won her maiden in a 5 1/2-furlong division of the Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park.

From there, Wrenice won an open-company allowance by 17 lengths at Retama, the six-furlong division of the Stallion Stakes at Retama, the $45,000 Houston Chronicle at Sam Houston, and the $50,000 Bara Lass against statebreds at seven furlongs in her last start, Dec. 2. For the Genesis, she will break from the rail under regular rider Bobby Walker Jr.

"I'd like to see her go to the front, kind of get out there and relax going into the first turn, set her up, and bring her on the second turn," said Mayfield.

Others in the six-horse field include Magnetic Miss, a stakes winner at Hawthorne, and the stakes-placed V.I.P. Princess, who invades from Fair Grounds.

o Red Cadillac owns the highest last-race Beyer Figure in the Triple Sec, an 82 he earned for his sharp maiden win at Delta on Dec. 29. He stalked the pace and drew out by 6 3/4 lengths for trainer Bubba Cascio. Among his chief rivals in the Triple Sec are stakes winners Daddy Warbucks and I Spy Wolfie, and Fair Grounds invaders Fortune's Praise and Sammy From Miami.
