Wrecking ball hits Ak-Sar-Ben

The last visible evidence of racetrack in Omaha, Neb., came tumbling down Friday morning as wrecking crews began demolition of the grandstand. The structure had stood empty since the track ran its last live race in late summer of 1995.

Much of the property at the track, which operated for more than 50 years and was regarded as one of top tracks in the Midwest in its day, has been converted for private business use and as a part of the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus. The remaining property is scheduled to be developed in the coming years.
