The globe-trotting Kabirkhan has been transferred to trainer Brad Cox and is currently stabled at Churchill Downs, with plans calling for a campaign in the U.S. this summer and fall.
Cox said the 4-year-old, most recently a well-beaten eighth in the Dubai World Cup in March after winning 10 of his first 11 starts, arrived at Churchill early last week and has had daily gallops. Cox has yet to circle an initial start for the colt.
“We’re just starting to get to know him and how he moves,” Cox said. “We’ll get to know him a bit more, then start to get a couple works under him before we make any plans.”
Kentucky-bred Kabirkhan is by the popular champion California Chrome, who now stands in Japan. After being purchased by Tlek Mukanbetkaliyev, Kabirkhan began his career in Russia and Kazakhstan, winning races designated as Group 1 events in both countries. He was then sent to Doug Watson and has made his three most recent starts in Dubai. Before the World Cup, he won the Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge by 4 3/4 lengths in January.
