Most prominent Fair Grounds-based 3-year-old colts and fillies turned in timed workouts this past Friday through Monday, many of them pointing toward the Louisiana Derby and the Fair Grounds Oaks on March 23.  One notable name absent from the work tab, however, was Track Phantom, winner of the Gun Runner Stakes in December and the Lecomte Stakes in January before finishing second behind Blue Grass Stakes-bound Sierra Leone in the Feb. 17 Risen Star. Track Phantom’s trainer, Steve Asmussen, said on Monday afternoon he was “only working Track Phantom one more time before the Louisiana Derby.” Track Phantom has been racing steadily since Oct. 1.  Hall of Fame, however, got in a five-furlong drill in 1:01 on Monday. A smashing second-start maiden route winner Jan. 20 at Fair Grounds, Hall of Fame was just seventh in the Risen Star, but though the colt remains eligible for a first-level allowance race, Asmussen said he plans to run Hall of Fame in another Kentucky Derby prep race, the Louisiana Derby being one option.  On Sunday, Honor Marie, a subtly encouraging fifth in the Risen Star, his first start since he won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on Nov. 25, had a major Louisiana Derby work, going 1:00.80. Honor Marie’s regular workmate, the impressive Feb. 17 debut winner Drip, didn’t breeze this weekend. Honor Marie instead worked inside of the capable 3-year-old sprinter Agoo. Honor Marie isn’t a flashy work horse, and this appeared to be one of his better drills this winter. Florent Geroux worked Honor Marie for the second week in a row. Rafael Bejarano, based at Oaklawn, has ridden the colt in his four starts.  Common Defense, second to Timberlake in the Rebel Stakes and an intended runner in the Louisiana Derby, had his first work since the Rebel when he went five furlongs in 1:00.80 breezing outside the solid 3-year-old Footprint on March 9.  :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Also on March 9, Catching Freedom, far from an impressive worker, turned in one of his better-looking moves while going outside the maiden Discreet Mischief, who Catching Freedom caught on the wire. Catching Freedom’s Brad Cox-trained stablemate Nash, a possible Louisiana Derby starter, worked five furlongs in 1:00 Saturday.  Mystik Dan, winner of the Southwest Stakes and aimed toward the Arkansas Derby, went a half-mile ion 48.60 on Sunday for Kenny McPeek, who also trains Common Defense.   Doncho, who has started his career with two sharp sprint wins at Fair Grounds, on March 9 went five furlongs on his own in a fast 59.80, working over a chewed up surface and galloping out strongly. Doncho is slated to run next in the seven-furlong Lafayette next month at Keeneland.  On the filly side, Intricate had her major Fair Grounds Oaks move on March 8, breezing from behind and outside two Brendan Walsh-trained stablemates. The work was recorded as a half-mile in 48 seconds, but the main part of the drill came past the wire, as Intricate left her mates far behind galloping out powerfully to at least the five-furlong marker on the backstretch.   Tarifa, who beat second-place Intricate last month in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes, also worked March 9, breezing in company with her Brad Cox-trained stablemate Alpine Princess, who won the Untapable Stakes on Dec. 23 but was a well-beaten fourth in the Rachel Alexandra. Tarifa, as is her wont, was very rank breaking off for the drill, and while she settled somewhat once Alpine Princess came alongside her at the three-furlong marker, Tarifa pulled hard through the homestretch while recording an official half-mile in 49 seconds.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
