Worker fatally injured at Gulf

A construction worker employed by the Suitt Construction Company died Thursday afternoon from injuries suffered on the job at Gulfstream Park.

Desmond Wickham, 35, was reportedly struck by a forklift while working in the barn area near the north side of the track.

Wickham was the second construction worker to die on the job in Hallandale Beach, Fla., in as many days. Wednesday, Mario Orozco was killed while working on a sewer line not far from the racetrack.

Hallandale police and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration were investigating Wickham's death. Track officials declined to comment on the incident.

Gulfstream Park has been undergoing a complete renovation since the end of the 2004 meeting. The project includes the construction of several new barns on both the north and east side of the track.
