Wootton, breeder, dead

David Grening|Feb 06, 2003

Mary Lou Wootton, the breeder of 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Silver Charm, died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 69.

Wootton was the director of the New York Thoroughbred Horseman's Association for 10 years and was a member of its executive committee. She also served on other backstretch-related committees including New York's B.E.A.T program, which helps with drug or alcohol abuse problems on the backstretch.

Wootton is survived by her husband, Gordon, children Michael and Jennifer, and a grandchild, Carly.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
