Woodbine: Winning Chance draws off

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Winning Chance notched her first stakes victory in the Ontario Matron Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile event at Woodbine worth $189,375.

Winning Chance raced in a stalking position under Todd Kabel, while Ginger Gold set moderate fractions of 23.81 and 48.24 seconds. Winning Chance moved into contention on the far turn and hit the front at the top of the stretch before drawing off for a six-length win.

Ginger Gold finished a clear second, while Small Promises checked in third in the nine-horse field of fillies and mares. The final time was 1:43.72.

"We had some pace in front of us, and she settled in nicely," Kabel said. "When I asked her to run a little on the backstretch, she was there for me."

Winning Chance ($3.50) earned $113,625 for Stronach Stable and trainer Danny Vella.
