ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Turf racing kicks off at the Woodbine meet in Friday’s nightcap with a $25,000 maiden claimer going a mile on the inner course. Post time for the first of eight races is 1 p.m. The seven-furlong inner course will be used exclusively while the main turf continues to undergo renovations. The resodding of the backstretch on the 1 1/2-mile main course was completed in May and should be available for racing later this year, according to Tim Lawson, Woodbine’s vice president of racing. “We are very pleased with how the [main] turf project has progressed,” Lawson said. “The sod is now settling and with the return of more favorable weather, we are confident in a return to racing on the footing for the fall.” Friday’s seventh-race feature, a six-furlong Tapeta sprint, will be an acid test for Frac Is the Judge. When debuting against $15,000 maidens over 5 1/2 furlongs on May 8, Frac Is the Judge went off at 6-1 in a six-horse field. After getting away a tad slowly, she tracked the leaders in the two path over an inside-favoring track before going on to score by 6 1/4 lengths with a 65 Beyer Speed Figure. Third-place finisher Captain Clutch came right back to graduate in a slow restricted maiden event at Fort Erie. Frac Is the Judge is jumping up in class to meet nonwinners-of-two Ontario-sired allowance types and $40,000 claimers on Friday. Leading rider Pietro Moran retains the mount for Colebrook Farms and trainer Patrick Dixon, who has begun the meet on a positive note. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Alluring Amy is stepping up in class but could go favored under Xarel Forde, who was aboard when she checked in second with the aid of an inside bias in a $25,000 nonwinners-of-two claimer May 8. She earned a career-high 66 Beyer in her second sophomore outing, and this third start of her form cycle could be even better. Robert Tiller trains her for owner-breeder Rolph Davis. Splash of Bourbon ran evenly when second in a 5 1/2-furlong dash at this level in her May 9 season opener, earning just a 56 Beyer in the process. Victorious I Got Murphed returned to beat nonwinners-of-three company with a 70 Beyer, which franked the form of Splash of Bourbon, who will be ridden again by Fraser Aebly for trainer Sid Attard. The Steve Attard-trained Regal Affair went five wide on the turn and wider in the stretch while closing to beat Ontario-sired and $40,000 maidens off a five-month break May 16. Rule the Waves, a 5-year-old who is returning from a one-year layoff, has been campaigned sporadically since graduating at first asking with a 77 Beyer in July 2024. Trainer Shelley Fitzgerald ran her just once last year in June, when she came up empty in a tough allowance/optional claimer. Completing the seventh-race field are Definite Diva, Ava’s Princess, and Tabei. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
