Woodbine trainer Nathan Squires dead at 62

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine trainer Nathan Squires, who conditioned Canadian champion Cairo Consort, died on Sept. 23 at age 62 after a long battle with cancer.
The personable Squires was an assistant trainer to the late Laurie Silvera before going out on his own. Since launching his career in 2025, he won 144 races from 1,301 starters and his runners earned nearly $3.9 million.
Squires trained the 2-year-old turf stakes winners Cairo Consort and Cairo Caper, who won the 2024 Soaring Free.
Cairo Consort was his best runner. She took the 2022 Catch a Glimpse and went on to finish second in the Grade 1 Natalma, both at Woodbine. Squires then sent her out to finish third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland, after which she was sold at auction for $875,000 and transferred to trainer Todd Pletcher. She was voted the 2022 Sovereign Award for Canadian champion 2-year-old filly.
In recent years, Squires had success developing 2-year-olds and selling them following a good debut performance.
