Woodbine: Sambuca on Ice scores

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sambuca on Ice split foes in deep stretch and went on to post a 7-1 upset victory in Saturday's $133,375 Bold Venture Stakes at Woodbine.

Jab set fractions of 22.09 and 44.30 seconds in the 6 1/2-furlong dash, stalked by Saratoga Prince. Wake at Noon raced in third on the outside, while Sambuca on Ice bided his time, sitting eight lengths off the early lead under Patrick Husbands.

Sambuca on Ice commenced his rally at the quarter pole and blew by Saratoga Prince and Wake at Noon just inside the sixteenth pole to win by three-quarters of a length over Saratoga Prince. Wake at Noon, the 4-5 favorite, was a neck back in third in the five-horse field. The final time was 1:16.06 over a fast track.

Sambuca on Ice ($16.20), trained by Rita Schnitzler, earned $80,025 for owner Frank Romano.

* Parose ($8.80) won the $106,000 Izvestia Stakes, for older Canadian-breds. Parose, who covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.45, finishing 1 1/4 lengths clear of favored Win City, last year's Canadian Horse of the Year.
