Woodbine: Regal Warning may have edge in Wednesday allowance sprint
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Closers on the outside have dominated on the last two Wednesday nights at Woodbine, and Regal Warning should be dangerous if the trend continues in a competitive third race Wednesday.
Regal Warning has scored twice at a good price, but he should be among the favorites in the six-furlong allowance for Ontario-sired nonwinners-of-three. He made quite a splash in his July 7 debut on Queen’s Plate Day, when he came charging wide from fifth to prevail as a 34-1 outsider.
Regal Warning went from that Ontario-sired maiden special to a nonwinners-of-two allowance Aug. 11, in which he wound up third as the favorite. After bombing in another Ontario-sired event Sept. 6, he tallied from off the pace by a nose at 7-1 in a seven-furlong allowance Sept. 25.
Regal Warning comes into Wednesday’s headliner off a six-week break, during which he breezed slowly on three occasions. Eurico Rosa Da Silva will ride the 3-year-old Regal Warning again for owner/trainer Debbie England.
King Forester should be an effective stalker under Gerry Olguin. The Danny O’Callaghan-trained 4-year-old King Forester is exiting back-to-back seconds at this level, which included a half-length loss to County Lineman on Oct. 9.
Fighting Chris has been a model of consistency since the spring for trainer Kevin Attard. After clearing the first Ontario-sired allowance condition in August, he raced wide throughout when fourth in the restricted Vice Regent Stakes on the grass.
Fighting Chris was a belated third behind County Lineman and King Forester when he cut back from a mile to 6 1/2 furlongs Oct. 9.
Olivier, who drew the outside post in the 12-horse field, is a longshot possibility. He rallied wide to finish on the edges in each of his two most recent excursions, including one at this level.
Ratso Rizzo and Flying Echo could link up on the early lead, with Silo Ridge tracking them.
Flying Echo rode a live rail in a 12-1 triumph in a six-furlong allowance Oct. 19, while holding off a closing Silent Yet Deadly. Silent Yet Deadly drew the dreaded one-hole Wednesday, when he will compete out of his proper condition.
Chief Chato parlayed a perfect stalking trip into a victory in a five-furlong allowance Oct. 6. He was previously in mediocre form.
◗ The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover heading into Wednesday’s eighth and final race is $148,519. Try Running is a must-use underneath in all positions in that $10,000 claimer.
