Woodbine preview: Remebel in form for turf sprint

Ron Gierkink|Jul 10, 2014

Turf racing: Lane 4 for the three races scheduled for the grass, which should be firm.

Race 6

This seven-furlong maiden special for fillies and mares is the lone non-claimer on a program that has lots of appeal from a betting perspective.

Remebel is the 3-1 morning-line favorite off a troubled second June 20 in a six-furlong turf event in her first appearance at the meet. She worked a bullet five-eighths over the training track in 1:01 last Friday and appears to be in fine fettle. Rejoiceful (4-1) flattened out to finish third behind Remebel in her second start off the bench June 20. The 4-year-old placed in three of her five outings and is more likely to round out one of the exotic wagers than to find the mark.

There are two nicely bred first-timers in the 14-horse field. The Roger Attfield-trained Orchard Beach, a daughter of leading sire Tapit, is a half-sister to a precocious Grade 3 stakes winner Necessary Evil. On Location, a Brian Lynch-trained daughter of Street Cry, is out of the millionaire turf expert Film Maker, the dam of Grade 3-placed grasser Film Shot.

Musical Beat and Flaming Katherine are two others trying the turf for the first time with some breeding for the surface.

Race 4

The seven-furlong tilt for $40,000 claimers has lots of speed, which could set the table for Lighthouse Sound (4-1) or Sky Commander (3-1). Lighthouse Sound is shortening up off back-to-back seconds over middle distances and is changing riders to Patrick Husbands. Sky Commander is dropping off several competitive efforts in difficult second-level optional-claiming company.

Morning-line favorite True Executive is questionable over the surface and figures to bounce off his good comeback in an overnight stakes.

Race 9

Both horses in the Kevin Attard entry of Big Brown Brookski and Erma Lee are in with a chance in this 6 1/2-furlong dash for $32,000 females. Jessie Campbell was named on both, so one could be scratched.

Others worth considering in the final leg of the second pick four are Miss Giacomo, who had a terrible trip stuck in traffic in a recent $32,000 route; Lil’ Sasha; and Laughing Falcon.

She was bottled up in traffic along the inside on the turn and in the stretch while being shuffled back in position. That was her first attempt in the selling ranks and a drop from that $32,000 maiden claimer would make her appealing next time.
