Woodbine: Portcullis fires late

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Portcullis stamped himself as a serious contender for the Aug. 10 Breeders' Stakes with a come-from-behind score in the Grade 3, $163,050 Toronto Cup Handicap at Woodbine.

Portcullis trailed early in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds, as Classic Case and Funny Soldier traded places on the early lead through moderate fractions. Portcullis commenced his rally at the top of the stretch, and closed along the rail to win by a half-length under Slade Callaghan.

El Soprano finished second, and Funny Solider edged favored Tails of the Crypt for third in the five-horse field.

* Jealous Forum ($16) rode a speed bias on the main track to a front-running victory in Saturday's other stakes, the $107,000 Wilderness Song for 3-year-old fillies.
