ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Heading into last Saturday’s $125,000 Frost King Stakes, trainer Ralph Biamonte had been concerned about his Flashy Margaritta’s ability to stay seven furlongs. But after watching the 2-year-old gelding lead throughout for a 1 1/2-length victory under Patrick Husbands, Biamonte was pleased to acknowledge that his fears had been unfounded. “I thought he might be gutsy enough, the way he’d been training, to hang in there,” Biamonte said. “You never know because there was some speed in there I was a little worried about, but he’s got a little more speed than I thought, and Patrick rode a heck of a nice race.” Flashy Margaritta, an Ontario-sired homebred gelding who races for Biamonte’s wife, Mary, and Danny Lococo, has won three straight restricted races, including the six-furlong Bull Page Stakes in his start prior to the Frost King. His earnings through four career starts stand at $181,500, and an appearance in the 1 1/16-mile Kingarvie, a $125,000 restricted stakes for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds here Dec. 7, is a strong possibility. “He came out of the race good,” Biamonte said. “I think he’ll just keep going.” Flashy Margaritta was the third Bull Page winner for Biamonte, who had sent out the ill-fated Double McTwist to win last year’s renewal and Jenna’s Wabbit to capture the 2011 edition. Citius, a half-brother to Flashy Margaritta, finished fourth in the 2010 Bull Page and became a stakes winner in 2011 in the restricted Bold Ruckus at six furlongs on turf. Citius continues to knock out a good living and has been particularly effective in the $40,000 conditioned claiming races that had their conditions altered this year to include any Ontario-sired horses, regardless of their number of wins. Citius has won his last two races at that level, bringing his seasonal bankroll to $118,708, and the gelding recently gave Biamonte his 1,000th career victory. Meeting over I’m a Kittyhawk Trainer Franz Crean will meet with the stewards Wednesday to discuss I’m a Kittyhawk, who won an allowance race here last Saturday but apparently was ineligible to compete under the conditions. I’m a Kittyhawk, the winner of a maiden race and the restricted Lady Angela Stakes here this spring, had landed her second restricted allowance condition Oct. 23. Saturday’s race was for fillies and mares “which have never won a race other than maiden, claiming, or restricted allowance or which have never won two races.” Ontario Racing Commission rules state that, “A licensee shall be responsible for the eligibility of horses entered by him/her.” Shippers to get a break Solid Appeal concluded her 2013 campaign with a close third-place finish in last Saturday’s Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap over 1 1/8 miles on turf at Churchill Downs. “She ran a good race,” said Reade Baker, who conditions the Kentucky-bred 4-year-old for Jim and Susan Hill. “I should have taken the blinkers off her somewhere along the line.” Solid Appeal won the Grade 2 Nassau and Grade 2 Dance Smartly on grass here this year and is a leading candidate for the Sovereign Award in the turf-female category. Riding the River, Canada’s reigning champion turf male, finished seventh, beaten 2 1/4 lengths, in Saturday’s Japan Racing Association Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on turf at Laurel. “He’s fine,” said Dave Cotey, the trainer and part owner of the 6-year-old gelding, adding that he was unhappy that Riding the River was not taken off the pace, as per his instructions. “We’ll let him down here, then send him to the farm. Hopefully, he’ll be back next year.” Riding the River won the Grade 2 King Edward this year while boosting his career bankroll to $933,167.
