ETOBICOKE, Ontario – There are some proven stakes performers in Saturday’s $150,000 Carotene, such as Smartyfly and Professor’s Ride, set for the 1 1/8-mile turf race for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies. But trainer Danny Vella will look to play spoiler with Blessed One, who has seen action just twice and is coming off a nice maiden score at a mile on grass here on July 27. “She was injured last year – that kept her from racing,” said Vella, who conditions Blessed One for Derek Chin. “We took our time getting her ready this year. We always liked her.” Blessed One debuted with a closing third-place finish at six furlongs on Polytrack before switching to grass and leading throughout under jockey Justin Stein. “I think she still was green in her second race,” Vella said. “She was a little too racy for her own good. If she settles, the farther, the better for her.” High weights for juveniles Weight was an issue for trainers John Ross and Roger Attfield in the 2-year-old stakes here last weekend. Ross, who trains and owns Go Greeley, accepted his 125-pound impost in Sunday’s 1 1/16-mile Grey Stakes and watched his stable star finish third, beaten 10 3/4 lengths by Ami’s Holiday, while spotting seven to 10 pounds to his three opponents. Attfield, who conditions Llanarmon for owner Dick Bonnycastle, balked at the 123 pounds that his filly was assigned for Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile Mazarine and pulled her from the race. Go Greeley had won three consecutive stakes, each worth more than $60,000 to the winner, which earned him a three-pound penalty under the Grade 3 Grey’s conditions. But all of those stakes scores were in sprints, and only one in open company. “I was disappointed about that much weight,” Ross said. “I know that’s the way the [condition] book was written, but I wouldn’t have expected it with a young horse who had never gone two turns.” Ross considered skipping the Grey but wanted to try Go Greeley going long on Polytrack before putting him away for the season. “We tested the waters,” Ross said. “He didn’t run a good race, but he ran respectably. He’s bred to go seven furlongs, at tops a mile.” Go Greeley, who finishes his first campaign with a healthy bankroll of $390,060, will head to Payson Park in Florida at the end of November. “He’s going to be a nice horse to start off the spring with in the sprints here next year,” Ross said. Llanarmon also would have been trying two turns for the first time, but her victory in the Natalma, a one-mile turf stakes, meant she would have had to tote two pounds more than the base weight for the Mazarine, spotting five to nine pounds to her opponents. The filly was listed at 118 pounds in the program, but her weight was corrected to 123 pounds on race day, and she was scratched. “Her main goal is the Princess Elizabeth,” Attfield said, referring to the $250,000, 1 1/16-mile race for Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies here on Nov. 2 in which starters will carry the scale weight of 119 pounds. “It’s a question of giving away that much weight,” Attfield said. “I just didn’t want to do that to the filly. She’s still immature, physically. She’s growing a bit, and I did think I could win it with the other filly.” Attfield sent out Unspurned to finish second in the Mazarine under 115 pounds, three fewer than the victorious highweight, Madly Truly. As far as the Grey and Mazarine weights were concerned, Steve Lym, racing secretary and director of racing for the Woodbine Entertainment Group, said he could not recall any objections in the past. “It’s something I’d never paid a lot of attention to,” Lym said. “I’ll look at it this winter.” Boulanger visits Keeneland Jockey Gary Boulanger will take a road trip to Keeneland to ride Indian Pond and Dene Court for trainer Mark Casse on Friday and Leigh Court for conditioner Josie Carroll on Saturday. Indian Pond has been entered in a one-mile turf allowance, while Dene Court will contest the $100,000 Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race for fillies and mares. Leigh Court will be seeking her fourth consecutive stakes win in the Grade 1, $400,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies. Attfield’s stakes runners work Attfield sent out Forte Dei Marmi and Perfect Timber for separate four-furlong breezes on the main track here Wednesday in preparation for the Oct. 27 Pattison Canadian International. Forte Dei Marmi went in 49.40 seconds under regular rider Eurico Rosa Da Silva, while Perfect Timber was timed in 48.60 under jockey Steven Bahen. Moment of Majesty, also trained by Attfield, breezed four furlongs in a bullet 47.40 under Boulanger, with an eye toward the Oct. 27 E.P. Taylor Stakes. Boulanger also breezed Irish Mission, who went five furlongs in 1:01.40 for trainer Mark Frostad and has been nominated to both the Canadian International and the E.P. Taylor. Both are Grade 1 turf races, with the 1 1/2-mile Canadian International worth $1 million and the 1 1/4-mile E.P. Taylor for fillies and mares worth $500,000.
