ETOBICOKE, Ontario – No Explaining, coming off a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 Canadian at 1 1/8 miles on grass here Sept. 15, will look to redeem herself in Saturday’s $100,000 River Memories. The overnight stakes at one mile on turf represents a drop in class for No Explaining, an Irish-bred 6-year-old who will face seven fillies and mares. “I’ve never seen her stop like that before,” said Roger Attfield, who trains No Explaining for Dick Bonnycastle. “I thought she was fitter than that.” No Explaining was retired in 2011, the year in which she won Pimlico’s Grade 3 Gallorette, but fell ill and was not bred. Returned to the races with Attfield after missing all of 2012, No Explaining made three starts prior to the Canadian, with her turf efforts including a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly at 1 1/8 miles and a victory under allowance conditions at one mile. On Wednesday, Attfield sent out No Explaining to breeze four furlongs on the main track in a bullet 47.60 seconds. “She’s trained well since her last race,” Attfield said. “She’s doing very nicely.” Leading rider Luis Contreras has the call on No Explaining. Part the Seas, claimed for $62,500 out of a third-place finish on turf here Aug. 3, won the Avowal Stakes at seven furlongs on grass last month in her first start for Danny Dion’s Bear Stable and trainer Mike De Paulo. “We were hoping she was going to run well; she ran a good race the day we took her,” said De Paulo, who again will give Justin Stein a leg up on Part the Seas. “There have been no issues with her. It’s been onward and upward.” Hobnobsnob will look to improve to 4 for 4 on the year. All of her victories have come on turf in front-running style, with her latest the 1 1/16-mile Victoriana Stakes here July 31. Her success has come in Ontario-sired company, however, and Hobnobsnob will be tested for class here under regular rider Gerry Olguin. Rounding out the field are Logan’s Peak, Tee Game, Queen of the Waves, Chedington, and Sky High Lady. Logan’s Peak and Tee Game are stakes winners on Polytrack, each having captured the 1 1/16-mile Algoma for products of the local yearling sale.
