Woodbine: Nashinda crushes rivals

Ron Gierkink|Jun 21, 2003

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Heavily favored Nashinda annihilated her four opponents in the five-furlong My Dear Stakes, winning by five lengths without any urging from jockey David Clark.

Nashinda emerged from a four-way scramble for the early lead to take control on the turn, then drew off in the stretch to cover the distance in 58.12 seconds. Mrs. Mistofelees rallied for second, while Molly's Gone ended up third. Maple Syrple and Solar Sail were scratched.

"It went perfect," said Clark. "It took her a quarter-mile to get her legs together, and she was on her way as soon as she hit the turn. Then, it was just a matter of steering her to the finish line."

Nashinda ($2.50) earned $112,275 of the $167,124 purse. A daughter of Silver Deputy, she is unbeaten in two starts for Augustin Stable and trainer Mac Benson.

Of the $161,334 wagered to show on the race, $156,948 was bet on Nashinda.

* Battlements ($4.70) notched his first stakes in the supporting feature, the $106,000 Afleet Stakes for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.

Battlements, trained by Barb Minshall for Minshall Farm, ran six furlongs in 1:10.26 seconds with Todd Kabel aboard. Sonofawac finished nearly four lengths back in second, while Shipman was third in the six-horse field.ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Heavily favored Nashinda annihilated her four opponents in the five-furlong My Dear Stakes, winning by five lengths without any urging from jockey David Clark.
