Woodbine Mohawk Park: Records galore for Lyons Sentinel

Lyons Sentinel ran her winning streak to five, and in the process established a new track, stakes and Canadian record, capturing the C$540,000 She's A Great Lady Stakes final on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park in 1:49 3/5 for driver Tim Tetrick.
Sent off as the 3-5 favorite Lyons Sentinel left alertly along with second choice Alicorn, with the latter cutting the action first with a 26 4/5 opening quarter. Reflect With Me got away in third, with JK First Lady fourth. Louis-Philippe Roy had Alicorn very well-rated, getting to the half in 55 3/5, and that kept the inside tier pinned to the pylons as longshot Somebeachsometime advanced on the rim to within a quarter of a length of Alicorn at three-quarters. As Alicorn reached three-quarters in an accelerated 1:23 1/5, Tetrick could wait no longer and edged Lyons Sentinel, a $55,000 purchase from last year's Harrisburg auction, off the pylons behind cover.
Swinging into the homestretch Lyons Sentinel kicked into high gear and got her head in front of Alicorn midway down the homestretch. Alicorn remained determined through the entire final quarter, but with speed to spare and a 26 2/5 final quarter to boot, Lyons Sentinel was simply too tough, winning safely. Alicorn held on to second, with Reflect With Me finishing well late in third and JK First Lady angling free for fourth.
"I didn't want to give Roy too much space," said Tetrick. "I took a chance getting locked in, but it all worked out."
Lyons Sentinel is owned by Threelyonsracing of Brantford, Ontario, and won for the sixth time in nine career starts. The daughter of Captaintreacherous is trained by Jim King Jr.
"She's done things we didn't think possible," said King following the race, high praise considering he currently trains leading Horse of the Year candidate Shartin.
